Oh my, just rode both of these bikes . So guys dont slam me for this. The GSXR1000 is much, much better than the r1! It makes the R1 seem like a caddillac driven by a 70 year old granny. It pisses me off that yamaha misses the mark by so much.

I still think that the yamaha r1 is a much better looking bike than the gsxr1000, but unfortunatly the R1 is not the best. Just the best looking. Ive tried to fool myself, saying that the r1 is just a bit slower than the Gsxr, but honestly, the gsxr1000 is a better bike.

The r1 fits me better than the gsxr, so thats a good enough reason for me to pick the r1. But its outdated now.

Of course speed has to do with pilot skill, but given 2 pilots of the same level of experience, the gsxr would SMOKE the r1.

confirmation

I have to say that I agree w/him. I have a 2k R1 now but after I rode my buddy's Gixxer 1k, my R1 went up for sale the next week! I must also say I am not brand loyal...I go for performance, and for me the GSXR 1000 floats my boat. I do love the R1's looks but something about that better handling and 12-15hp advantage that rubs me in a better way. :finger Don't worry when I convert...I won't become one of the guys who bash everyone who doesn't own a gixxer. I will just continue to give Honda boys a hard time lol!

The GSXR 1000 is a much better bike than a 01 or below R1. The 02R1 has nothing in common with the Old bike except the name. Don't believe me??? Go out and thrash on one. I'm personally getting the 02 R1 over the GSXR. Tryout an 02R1 before you make your decision. You will walk away impressed.

hmmmm.....Almost the same engine, only with FI...Same brand forks and shock (just 2mm bigger forks) Similar frame, same wheelbase, same gear ratios and a dry weight just 2 lbs less than a 2001.....

Sounds like a pretty similar bike to me :)

Seriously...............................

It really does'nt matter, unless you're riding at ten tenths or max military (that's 110% for you non military types). If you look at the tested times a good 600 sportbike i.e.; r6,Gixxer6 or zx6 will give a literbike a good run for the money in 0-60 and 1/4mi times. And the same goes with handling where equal pilots are concerned. The last time I went out to Sebring and ran my civic (1.8L 4cyl 12.8sec quarter mi. 1.8 60ft N/A , 197hp 127ft/lbs @ 7200rpm : for haters) there was a newbee there in a spankin Viper GTS. After getting spanked by a gang of civics going around the roadcourse this guy gets mad and complains about something being wrong with his car. It was'nt that there was anything wrong with his 400hp beast , it was just that the civics were purpose built for flogging and he was there in a bone stock Viper. While I don't yet have the skill to take the Gixxer 1k or my own R1 to the 10/10 level , I believe that given equal piloting skills the R1 would come out on top If both were to be used in accordance with design. All things being equal the bikes stated purpose is road racing hence the RR ( race replica) designation. And according to the laws of physics the r1 wins. And before you throw out the Matt Mladin card. Remember theres a world of difference between a superbike and a race rep. (hint hint 200hp NSR's).

DISCLAIMER: NOT FOR SPITE, JUST MY 2cents.

02 R1

Believe me, when I tell you that the difference between the 02 R1 and the older models is tremendous. I have 1000 miles on the clock of my 02 and I must say that I can't believe the difference in handling. This bike rails around turns, asking for more throttle. It is going to get a lot of riders in trouble with the law, but it will also bring smiles to their faces every time they face a new turn.
The power is only slightly better, but it is noticeable in second and third gear.

The bike rocks and I am not just saying that because I have one.

Try it for yourself.

Gixxer's again

I'll weigh in again, why not;) I've rode my buddies enough to know a couple of things about them. #1 ) stock for stock, motorwise, straightlining, top speed, midrange torque, no contest. The Gixxer walks on the R-1. Not as bad as you might think, but still noticeable. #2 ) the R-1 has a better more planted feeling front end when you turn it up, and better brakes # 3 ) I'm sorry, the big Zuki is FUGLY, bland uninspired styling ( Honda's all look like honda's too, but they aren't as ugly as the zooks ), OH......... is that a 600? or a 750? What? look for the coating on the forks to tell?? Very bland.
#4 ) rode above an 80% pace ( i.e. getting into stupidville unless you are on a track ) the more skilled rider will determine which bike winds up in front. ;) The thresholds are so much higher than the ability of 90% of the guys that buy them, that rider skill IS the determining factor, period:yesnod The rest fellas, is all :bs and bench racing, no?;)

I ride with a couple of guys on stock Hondas (900 & 929). They have ridden my R1 (with mods). They said my bike is faster and better handling. Yet, I struggle to keep them in sight through the twisties. (I have the stone chips across the front to show for it!) The rider is the difference.

That's a circuit where anyone can be a winner. :yesnod

Buying a bike with better handling must be the number one priority, you can always fix the hp numbers, but what do ya do bout the frame and measurements. Get a bike that handles well, then get your desired hp. + The R1 is the most beautiful bike ever. Modify your R1 instead of getting something without soul. My two cents

I'd say the oposite is just as important. Engine tune is expensive. Improving the chassis isn't cheap either, but doesn't have to cost more than the price of a new exhaust.

At the level the latest sportbikes are at though, it is mostly a question of personal preference i.m.o.

Here's my take and trust me I went from 2k1 r1 to GSXR1000 back to 2K2 r1. The Gixxer by far a faster bike but I felt more comfortable on the r1 its more of a bike for the streets. I didnt like the cornering on the gixxer found it more enjoyable on the r1. The power on the gixxer is just amazing i must say but over all its too wide and too much of a pig for riding on the street.
