OK, this may be a noob question, but I am not an electrical guy.

all four my headlights and instrument lights stopped working. . .

Sensible answer would be a fuse. All fuses are good though. I even swapped out the headlight fuse just to be sure and tested the new and old one for contimuity. Both passed.

What else would it be that would make all these lights stop working?

Not an '07...

Not on an '07 but on my '05, behind the right mid panel... I had a problem with the harness that ran to the lighting.



Check, maybe your harness iz doing the same chit? :dunno Mine had one wire in that plug, that waz arcking.

Yup gotta be the harness connectors. The fuse for the lights are different than the fuse for the instrument display.

Thanks for the input fellas. I was thinking that the fuses were different. I will pull the right side down tonight and check connectors over there.

I just didnt know if maybe it was relay driven too.

If anyone else has any thoughts, throw them at me. I will post the solution that I find....once I find it.

On with the saga. . .

On my 07 the harness connector in question is on the left hand side of the bike, zip tied to the fuse panel. Its a translucent 10 pin connector with 2 rows of 5 wires. In one of the corners, there is a heavier Red wire. (it has a stripe on it, not sure what color off hand) The connector is yellowish brown in that area from being over heated. The metal pins also seem coroded.

Well upon wiggling the connector, you will see it arc on that pin as well. The connection will break and not allow the headlights to work. If you unplug and plug it in a couple times, you might get them to come on. But its a crap shot when they go out. (you ever try to ride home at night with just the little marker lights? YOu have about 10 feet of visability. Maybe 20.

Anyway, I called Yamaha Corporate today. What a waste of time THAT was.

After going through all the teleprompt options, I decided none of them fit the "pissed off, almost died because the headlights unexpectedly failed at night customer" option. So I waited for an operator.

Jane answered the phone. She took all my personal info, VIN number etc. Then I explained her my issue. She informed me there was no recalls on the 07. She then Transfered me to "Product Specialist" Joseph. Who once again heard me out on the issue.

He suggested I take it to a dealer and have them check it out. I asked him about the cost of the stealership looking at it or repair. I asked if I was out of luck and he said I was 10months out of warranty. So I asked if he was saying because I am out of warranty of I am on my own and out of luck, he said "yes."

So even though this plug had never been touched since its factory assumbly until after the failure, no wairing harness modifications have been made that could even remotely effect this circuit and this is a factory defect of some kind which could have killed me. . .I am on my own.

Where is that Honda dealer.. . I am suddenly feeling the need to break 23 years of customer loyalty.

I am going to go to the stealership, and see what their "experts" have to say.

I even said "I know Shane McCoy. ." To which I got "who is that?" :lol

I just had this exact problem happen to me today. Lucky for me it happened during the day time. Thats why I'm on here now trying to figure out wtf just happened. when I turn the ingnition on the guage cluster lights up like normal, but when I start the bike it blacks out and the head lights won't turn on. All the fuses are fine. I will check the wiring harness tomorrow. I'm just glad I got an extended 3 year warranty that covers the entire bike including the wiring.

Anyone have a picture of the connector in question? I had this happend to me last night.. Started up the bike at a buddies and the cluster started flashing and making noises like described above.. I decided to just ride home since my g/f was behind me in my truck.. Then I realize that I have no headlights.. That was not a fun ride home.. Thankfully it was only 3 miles on side streets.

I took the left fairing off and started looking at it. I knew if I jiggled the harness I would see the cluster backlight come on but as soon as I started the bike it would go off and no headlights..

I was way to tired from the weekend to make any good decisions or troubleshooting so I'm going to attack it when I get home today.. Would just like to see a pic of the plug so I know exactly where to look..

I don't have a picture of it yet but I can get you one after I get off work. But the harness plug is on the left side behind the mid fairing torwards the front. It's clearish white. I beleive the wire is yellow and red. Either way you will see the the wire conection is burned or melted where the wire it connected to the harness. If you have HID's that can happen. I just cut the wires each end of the harness and put a thicker connector on it. It fixed the problem and never had an issue again. The wire connections in the harness are too small and can't carry the current that HID's pull, so it will get really hot and burn up the harness and wire and ground it to another wire blowing fuses or shoring out your headlights and gauge cluster. The bigger connection can handle the current.

I pulled the wire out of the connector and put my own connectors on it. You can tell from looking at the connector it was over heating and the factory connection was either too small or faulty. Thing is, I have factory headlights on mine.

I can snap some high quality very high (12MP) photos if needed or some simple iphone pics. PM me and let me know. It might take me a day or two, as I am pretty busy this week with wok and all.

The above pic of the 05 is a little different (I think) than the 07/08, but its the same idea. The wire that powers the headlights and cluster will be the biggest wire in the connector.

You can pull both sides out of the connecter, cut the current pins off and put in a better quality connector. However, be careful as there is not much extra wire there if you mess up. If you have an extended warranty, then I would go to the dealer. However, with HID's installed, they might not do anything. None the less, the fix is not very difficult and it takes about 1 -2 beers, depending how fast you are, to complete the job for someone with average mechanical ability. :fact

I wonder if they changed anything through the build dates or if it's just a case-by-case basis? I couldn't imagine going around a blind turn at night and having everything go dark on me. I can't explain how mad I'd be.

Oh, I can explain how mad I was. I called every frickin Yamaha number I could find. (even got their piano division once, oops. Needless to say they didn't give a fack about my R1 issues either.)

Thanks for the tips guys.. I forgot to look at this again after I posted.. I came home and found the burnt connector.. I just cut the red/yellow stripe wire and put a nice jumper in between it.. Worked like a charm.. Now I can ride my bike to work tomorrow.. yay!

Weird thing is.. I don't have HID's. I just have the stock lights and this happened..

Same here Bro. Stock lightes, factory bulbs, never been changed.

Glad you got it fixed. It's kind of scary to have happen at night when you live out in the country. :)

Luckily, I don't ride fast at night. Too many deer around here. If you have ever seen wha a deer does to a car, you can imagine a bike is definately no match. Bikes do the typical sportbike thing, explide into a million pieces, then you go flying over the deer's back and face plant the road. :crash

same problem on my bike as well three days ago .. checked fuse .. its blowing again n again .. got needed info here .. gona check connectors ..
staling .. up down idling .. bad clutch sound .. bad starting .. what yamaha did in 2007 and 08 models .. had 05 R1 , 06 gsxr 1000 , 07 gsxr 1000 before this bike ... neva had these problems ..

this same happened to me except only one of my bulbs are lighting now.
arent both headlights on the same connector? if so, why would only one fire up? both bulbs are nearly brand new.
also is it easy to replace the connector or do i just need to find the specific wire and fix it

Well today is May 09, 2011 and I went to start my bike today and neither low beam or high beam lights came on. Aux lights are operative. That's not all, the high beam indicator is on constantly no matter what position the switch is in. I checked the Head light fuse it was good. When the fuse is out the indicator turns off, and Aux lights turn off.

I had the exact same problem with my '08 last week. No headlights, high or low, and no blue back lights for the dash. The dash display all worked, and all marker lights, turn signals & brake lights were fine. I found the junction block in the harness and a burnt & corroded looking wire in it - red w/ a yellow stripe. Came on here before bypassing the block just in case of any other issues, and lo and behold it's yet another common issue with these bikes. :crash I pulled the pins from the block and cleaned out as much of the melted plastic as possible, snipped the connectors, bypassed the block and reconnected with my own connectors. Ding, Ding, Ding!! Everything was back in order again. :)

And yes, it's right next to the little fuse box on the left side of the bike.







My headlights are 100% stock. I do have Watsen flushies and a Comp Werkes fender eliminator tag and signals, but they've both been on for a few years. What makes this pin overheat and melt the plastic?
