Well guys I just bought my first R-1. I have never ridden one before and probably will not until spring breaks here in Ohio. I found a used 04 for $5200(all stock) and thought that seemed to be a pretty fair price. Now before everyone flames me for never having an R-1 I am not new to bikes. I'm sure I have wrecked more times than most have been on a bike. I have ridden motorcross(man dirt hurts), ice racing(this hurts more than dirt LOL) and of course much fun as as a kid on my old FZR. I am moving from a Modded V-Max to my R-1. So my question is, my Max along with all my other bikes had a few flaws to watch out for, like steering bearings and oil pan O-ring on the Max. What should I be aware of on the R-1? You guys are the experts so I will listen to you. If you have a V-Max question I'm sure I can answer that LOL.

Welcome to the R1 forum. I have an '04 that is slightly mod'd. I'm just over 10k miles and never had a single problem.

As far as wrecks... dirt hurts, ice hurts more... but guide rails and telephone poles would hurt even more. Be safe.

LOL....lucky for me I have never had road rash, not looking forward to something like that. I am a bit older and wiser than that now. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago I would have.

Well that and you have to get used to the positioning on them. Enjoy it though.

Make sure the TPS has been replaced to the new style. They had a recall in 05, but not everyone was informed about it unless they were on this site.

Nice to meet you all. I am new to R1 forum as well. I I just got rid of my 600 gixxer and bought an 2002 R1 for $3,700. It has a Yoshi pipe an nothing else. I bought it with 10,500 miles on it and was wondering what all I can expect out of it. Probably needs a valve adjustment... What else?

Aren't the handle bars on the 04s installed backwards?
On them, you have to push to the right in order for the bike to go left.
Get it fixed asap, before you go the wrong way. lol

Welcome to the forum. That is a good price with that many miles. Just watch out for the power on the bike otherwise they are very reliable. Sometimes the oil drain bolts get stripped so don't over torque them, but that's just about it really.

Great thanks to everyone. I looked up TPS wow lots of info. No star by my SN so I guess I will call the stealer to have it done. That good info about the drain plug too since I always do all my own work on all my bikes.

My two cents, respect the beast and her throttle, they run hot so arse and legs might feel it, and oh she is hard on the nuts.
