I burned the iso. CD of Knoppix and booted my laptop with the CD in the drawer already but it didn't start Knoppix. I'm guessing I have to make the computer boot from the CD drive but I have no idea how to do this:dunno :crash

You try booting to the BIOS and making sure the computer will boot from the CD? BIOS access hit DEL or F1 key while you first turn the computer on.
Other than that, I don't know how well Linux runs on notebooks.
I have Knoppix disk and it's awesome! I was a partition / dual boot guy for a long time but not since I got this disk :)

When you computer is starting up you should have a prompt that comes up to tell you that if you want to change your bios settings hit a button.

Do this and once in your bios settings there will be a place where you can change your boot order.

Just put it to boot from cd first.

If you have the cd in the drive, do you only see the knoppix iso file, or do you see a listing like this:

[email protected]:/data/Software/Linux$ ls /mnt/iso/
KNOPPIX/ autorun.inf* boot/ index.html
autorun.bat* autorun.pif* cdrom.ico

If it's just the .iso file, you need to tell your burning software to create a cd using the iso.

BTW, Linux runs great on laptops. There's a few gotchas, but Knoppix should run quite well. :thumbup

If all you're running is Knoppix, time to format and install Linux. :thumbup

Fjorn- It looks like all those files are there. I guess I just need to hit the F1 key while booting up and change the setting so it boots from the CD first?

Yep, that's probably the culprit.

I set my boot sequence to the following:

CD-Rom
HDD

I disable any other boot methods for security reasons.

Is it plugged into a cable or wireless? I'm not familiar with wireless for Linux, as I don't have a wireless setup.

If you pull up a command line, type in the following:

ifconfig

That should show whether you have an IP address or not.

I use wireless connected to a cable modem. Once I have the ip address what do I do with it? I'm looking around on the Knoppix forum too but I don't know WTF they're talking about for the most part.

Once you have an IP address you're on the network and ready to surf or do tasks across the network.

Look for the console, that's where you'll find the command line. Or, you might be able to right-click and pull up a console there. I don't use knoppix too often to know where it is offhand unfortunately.

kppp is for dialing with a modem typically.

Did it give you an ip address similar to this:

[email protected]:~$ /sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:76:B7:FD:CB
inet addr:192.168.12.3 Bcast:192.168.12.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:68847 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:71915 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:68175481 (65.0 Mb) TX bytes:51841740 (49.4 Mb)
Interrupt:10

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:149 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:149 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:13123 (12.8 Kb) TX bytes:13123 (12.8 Kb)

eth0 is your network device, while lo is your loopback device. Can you use a physical LAN to connect instead of wireless? Might also try giving the command iwconfig a try as well.

I found this doing a quick google, not sure if it'll help you out though.

I got it to work!!!! I had to plug in to my router. I'll have to figure out why it won't connect with my wireless card.
