Please can someone tell me how I can identify which model year of bike I have. It was registered in March 2006 and is an American import Yamaha R1 (Blue in colour). I'm sure it is a 2006 model, but how can I tell? I mean, could it actually be a 2005 model?

look at the neck of the bike on the right side. there will be a white sticker there with a vin# and a model year

Thanks. There is a white sticker with the VIN number and at the top of the sticker it reads 11/05

Does this mean it is a 2005 model?

The 10th digit on the frame is the year i.e. JYARN13E04A000000 The 4 is an 04
2=02
3=03
4=04
5=05
6=06
7=07
etc...

The 10th digit is a 6. But the 7th digit is a 5 - you sure it's the 10th?

Is there any other meaning to the digits? ie. where it has been manufactured, colour etc etc

the white sticker your talking about is the month and year of production which is done the year before its released...so if yours says 11/05 its an 2006 model. my 05 reads 11/04

How did you buy a bike and not know what year you were getting?
Or is it a wreck/ salvage bike?

yep tenth digit...mine was built in 2/04 and my tenth digit is a 4 for 2004

IE: a bike or car with a manufacture date 06/05, would actually be an 06... :fact

When I bought my 06 in may of 06 got it brand new 1 mile on it anyway a couple days later I was checking it out thinking how kewl I was to have one. I then noticed the vin sticker on the frame 10/05 "That mofo sold me a 05!" I got on this site and searched and found the vin# code for what year bike it is and whew mine really was a 06.

my '08 has that white sticker saying 2002.. i asked the yamaha guys and they said it was the date of production for the frame.. :dundun:

i checked online for the VIN decoding but mine doesn't decode to any valid year.. i guess the european ones are coded differently.

That doesn't make any sense. There have been multiple frame changes from '02 to '08 (sorry if I am being captain obvious here)

Any bike produced on 07/03 through 06/04 is a 2004 model year.
Any bike produced on 07/04 through 06/05 is a 2005 model year.
Any bike produced on 07/05 through 06/06 is a 2006 model year.
Any bike produced on 07/06 through 06/07 is a 2007 model year.

honestly, i've always been skeptical of its make.. for a while i had this feeling the yamaha dealers were putting '08 fairings on old models.. (dunno if that is even possible)

How about posting a pic of the bike and then we can tell you the range of years the bike within?

Yes the UK one must be different. My 2007 has got 2002/04 on the white sticker.

Looks to me to be a 2007 or 2008. Definately not any other year.
