Hi Guys,

I have a 99 R1 that i've been riding this season and absolutely love. I picked it up at approx 51,xxxkm's and currently have 72,xxxkm's on it.... in miles that'd be 48000mi

Now here's my dillemma; she burns no oil, needs minor maintainance, a tune-up at best, and boots like a bat outta hell. Only issue I ever had was up against an '04 Gixxer 1000.

So here's my dillemma; I'm not sure what to do with her? I need ideas!

I'm attempting to sell her for a meager $4000cdn as is with a couple of mods; my reasoning being if Im going to put money into a bike, why not just get a new one?

I was considering an 02/03 engine swap, but I dont know where to pick one up that would be reputable/reliable.

Any insight/suggestion would be appreciated.

I'm confused. You say it runs great, uses no oil and just needs a basic tune-up. Why are you considering a new motor if there is nothing wrong with this one? :dunno

that motor is strong. keep it, not worth the 02 motor swap. if you want to kick an 04 gixxer1000's ass, just put on a full exhaust, air filter, keihin flatslide carbs, and a jet kit....the tune that puppy on a dyno and your set (vroom, vroom:) )

FI engine swap is no easy task. If you're happy with it, keep riding it til it dies. I currently have a 99 R1 and have no intentions on ever selling it.

add to that a ported and polished head and go 1 tooth down in the front. Then sneak up on all the newer bikes like I do.

with those high km on it, i would be more worried about the gear box than the motor.. if the gearbox still seems fine i reckon its a great time to sell it

imho the cost of maintaining an older bike will more than likely equal the cost you would pay on repayments for a newer bike

What are you racing in a straight line? Dude you don't need to do any work to it. Learn how to ride and smoke that gixxer out on the track. 48,000, she's got alot more to go. like they said ride it till she's dead, save your money for tires and trackdays

yeah, I think that is the bestpart about my bike. No monthly payments. The money you would spend on bike payments, use it to mod your bike

....well guys, I hate to say this, but she sold on Friday!

I took my last ride out with her that night, and handed over the papers to the new owner. She's sitting in my garage right now, but with no papers. He's to pick it up sometime this coming week.

Annoyingly enough my best friend just went out and picked up an '01 R1.....gah....some people have no taste so they pick on others.

Never fear, "the one" is in my blood......it'll be the only bike I buy next. I'm excited for a newer one!

Ideally I'm looking for an 03 LE, a dream would be the 04/05 LE Raven.

Ive got a '99 R1 with 13,000 miles on it (the picture is on the pictures section of this site) and I have to say all it need now is a dynojet kit and that will be me :rock

She already has a Race Can and K&N filter and the power it delivers is unreal... I'll keep her till she dies :thumbup

Just for the record, you could've put keihin flatslides on her, a graves full system, ram air box, ignition advance, thin head gasket, and you'd of been in the 160ish rwhp range. with less weight then a 05.

I have a 02 954 with 27,000 miles on her and she doesn't miss a beat. I have had guys ride my bike that have newer models and say that my bike feels better and newer than theirs. Obviously some of these people don't take care of their bikes very well. All I do is trackdays and ride aggressive in the twisties, so I am by no means easy on her. It's all about how you take care of your machinery. I have a friend that just tears up bikes in less than a year because he just doesn't care. If you take care of these machines you probably don't have much to worry about till you get over 60,000, with the exception of regular maintenance and wear and tear parts.
