Can manufactures really make bikes any more powerful then they are now and still sell them to the public? Maybe a better question is would the gov't allow it? We already have a restriction in place not allowing bikes to go over 200mph off the showroom floor. Will it really be worth while to by a sportbike 10 years down the road knowing they aren't really going to perform a lot better then today's bike? Technology has changed a lot in the past couple of years. The bikes we ride today have proven that. Are manufactures reaching a point where they won't be allowed to go any further? If you answer no, what can really be done? We know they will get lighter, that's a given. Do you think they would actually produce a bike to go 300mph off the showroom floor? Doubtful. IMO. What do you think?

I think that was the same sentiment back in the 80's when the first Ninja came out. They couldnt even fathom the capabilities of the R1 or such....

Who knows, in 10 years technology will have advanced more, products will be cheaper, maybe the sportbikes of 2013 will be equal to the MOtoGP bikes of today? Something like that.

Faster and faster....

Look at cars.. 500hp stock american cars. Who would have thought that a few years back.

You think it can't get any faster on the street. What did people say 5-10 years ago??? The same thing I'm sure.

Even if they don't have any more hp.. I'd take a 150hp bike that weights 100 lbs less then my R1.... Carbon Fiber only gets cheaper :)

Can you imgagine ..................

First bike threads would look like this.....................

Hey guys, I'm new here. I've never ridden a bike befoer *sp* and was thanking *sp* about gettnig the 07' M1. My frenz tol me I shud prolly get an oldre less powerful bike like an 02 R1. I had a buddy whose dad let me ride his 02' because he was about to sell it to get a new M1. It had a full akropovic ( or whatever the hell that name iz .) with a custom tuned by Graves Powercommander 3R ( the old ones without the satellite uplink and data aquisition.) . I felt like I could handel it because I rode up the street a few times. But the power was really not enough. I jut have to have the new M1 , those things :rock and the new electric fusion paint that lets you change the color with a thumbswitch is da bomb. I know y'all will be mad but I think I can handle a 200lb bike with 320 wheel horespower. BTW, does any of you have the MSF hologram, I want to watch it and do the simulator soon.
Thanks Newb Rider.

It's not a legal restriction in the sense that a manufacturer could face fines or anything, it's an industry-wide agreemant to limit (artificially, if necessary) the top speed to 186mph (200kmph). It was instituted in 2000 with the release of the Hayabusa and ZX12R.
I know some forum bros have seen higher than that on thier speedos, so I'm not sure where this agreement stands today...

WTF is with these old threads!?!?

anyway they will get lighter and probably slightly more powerful, but have restrictions on them that will be easily defeated. Electroniclly governed to 150mph, the R1's will come out with 2 sets of injectors (like the R7) but only one set will be active. Buy the computer thing and activate those other 2 and take out that govner, take the exhaust brake (exup extreme) out and then have 170hp, 330lbs dry race machine capable of 210mph for 9500 bucks plus 1500 bucks in mods.

COUNT ME IN!!!!

LOL im thinking the same thing as solidus.
"should i get the new M1 cuz i am a responsible highschool kid and i saw that old movie torque, torque2 and 14k. I also saw that special on FOX (rev happy squids and the skin lost by doing 12 oclocks with no shirt on) so i know all kinds of stuff about motorcycles, Thats why i dont wana start on an R1, that is such an outdated design. But ill never go over 200mph because i have throttle control"
Insurance is guna be SOOOO high!!!! I bet all companies drop full coverage on motorcycles.

Someone would have worked out anti-gravity by then and we'll all be floating around powered by small jets of air....

WHO WILL BE THE QUICKEST ????

The guy with the biggest aerosol can....

It will all be about BRAKE BLOW POWER !!!!!:lol

My girl should do well.

Old thread or not I always thought about this. Remember when the biggest Ninjas came out and they started legislation to limit bikes to 100hp? :lol Freakin' 600s make that now! I'm with the guys who think bikes will verge on what MotoGP is now... the span between top race bikes and showroom bikes is about 10 years, but I think now it's gonna' be different. We are lucky enough to be at the event horizon... by the time bikes DO verge on MotoGP performance they will be banned. Guaranteed. Even the best racers in the world crash HARD on perfect tracks. Whatta' ya' think 'ol Skippy-TwoNuts is gonna' do with 180 rwhp? I've been on bikes my whole life and I'll be the first to say the R1 is freakin' dangerous... The little jump between the R1 and Gixxer 1K is already maiming people... I expect HP progress will either slow down or bikes will end up being banned... Of course I HOPE neither happens! :crash

I think you will see carbon fiber frames as the next major weight reduction. Of course, a small collision will total a bike then...oh wait, it does that now. Anyway, they could shave a lot of pounds by going to a cf frame.

I don't see how in America a motor vehicle could end up being banned. It would have to be proven that a high-powered MC poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of society at large. I'm trying to think of some things that as Americans, we can't get, and I'm having a pretty hard time. Drugs, kiddie porn, sure, but what else? Fireworks, in some states, switchblades, certain military weaponry. But hell, with the right permit you can even own a fully-automatic machine gun. People can have tanks in their front yards if they want (ask Tom Clancy).
We are so lucky to live in this country where I think it would be just about impossible to prevent the average citizen from obtaining just about anything he wants, as long as the only head he blows off is his own. Remember, politicians would have to pass a law in the state senate, with a public vote. There would be debate and publicity. Even non-MC enthusiasts would decry such a move solely on a civil liberties basis. Thank God for the USA and the Constitution.
Please don't interpret this as me bashing other countries. I'm not-- I'm just happy to be here.

Great post. Funny how that happens now. I keep hearing newbies ask about an r-1. and everyone advises them that they should start with a "beginner" bike like a r6 or something. Really cracks me up at the gixxer forum when a new rider says he isn't ready for the gsx1k, so they decide to start with a bike more sutible for beginners like the gxsr750??

I think in the future us m1 riders (www.m1-forum.com) will advise the newbies to get a beginner bike like the m6 instead of the mighty m1, which only has like 260 horse power.
