ok maybe not. but GOOD LORD its all i hear about these days 04 this 04 that. I just bought a basically new 03 and im really pumped. but everday i come on here and all i hear about are the damn 04's someone should start an 02/03 owners thread for those of us that dont have an 04. Oh well, i suppose im just jealous of you guys :crash perhaps in a few months all the hype will simmer down some? :dunno

hey snowman, is this your 1st R1, my 03 is my 1st...(NOT MY FIRST BIKE) i said my 1st R1. people on here get flame happy when the hear of ppl buyin an R1 as a first bike. But anyways when i first got it i was scared to ride the damn thing after reading all the(R1 is too much for you) posts on here. But after my 1st ride on her i fell in love! All the R1 years are great. And there are way more 98-03 bikes out there than 04 bikes. Once the hype and newness dies down the posts will get to be more diverse again. A lot of us are still waiting on our 04s so we tend to ask for info and opinions from those guys who got theirs already.

Funny how some people can state categorically that one bike is better than another ( eg blade is better than zx10 ), and then some people state categorically that one model is better than another...
Sure, the new bikes are supposed to be better, otherwise wouldnt the factory just come out with a new paint job for the new one? By the same token, IMHO, whether a bike is 'better' or not may depend on what your particular application is.
As I understand it, the 04 makes a great track bike, but the 02\03 has better traction down low, making a better ROAD bike.

I have an 04 R1 and also a 98 R1. The 98 is way better than the 04 in several ways:
1. The tranny gearing
2. The clutch
3. Low end and midrange power
98 to 03 R1 owners have nothing to be upset about, those bikes rule!

But I have ridden plenty of bikes (ZX-6, CBR 900 RR, GSXR 750 etc...) So I have plenty of experience in the field. Shibby, time is running, also for the R1. The 04 model is the best R1 ever, at least for racing/twisties. But this doesn't mean that the older R1 models are bad, outdated or no fun to ride!
It's normal that one talks about new stuff, the 02/03 R1 has been "THE" theme here for the past years. The 04 R1 will see the same fate in 2 years
So enjoy your R1!
