Long story short, my buddy and I switched bikes for a short time. Well, I dropped his in the drive way and just priced out the plastics to replace. $1000 approximately. Can I turn this in to my insurance for a claim? I have full coverage, $500 deductible, and have never had a claim before. Anyone have info on this?

I wouldn't...espeically for 500 bucks. You will pay more in higher premiums over the next few months than to just find the plastics on here or ebay.

Check with your insurance co. I claimed 4k when I crashed my first R1 and my insurance only went up $40 per year. Depending on your company, it may or may not be worth it.

That's why I was asking here first, I've heard horror stories of people calling to ask their agent if they should make a claim on something and then getting stuck on some "underground" list that circulates through the insurance world. I really appreciate all the responses so far.

Your not going to be able to claim his bike on your insurance. He will have to use his insurance or have you pay it outright. The only way you could possibly claim it on your insurance is if you knocked his bike over with yours, then they would pay him the full amount, but your rates will go up.

hmm. Does this differ between cars and bikes? My agent has told me that if I am driving someone elses car and have an accident that MY insurance would cover it. I assumed this would be the case with the bike as well.

I'm an insurance agent. Rating is fairly complicated and you could never tell if making a claim will raise rates by a specific amount. Each company rates policies using a number of different criteria. If 1 claim regardless of amount places you in a different rating tier then it is possible for your rates to significantly rise. However, some companies may look at amount and not re-tier you in their system, hence, no rate change. You could always ask them to quote you with a new policy, 1 accident free and the second with an accident. This would give you an idea about how much the rate could be subject to change.

When you drive someone else's car, their insurance is primary and yours is secondary. If you drive someone else's car that does not have insurance then your policy would come into play. He would have to make the claim himself on his own insurance as he is the one with an insurable interest on his bike.

This is subject to the insurance regulations of the state of Texas. If another state gives primary coverage to the driver of the car, that is beyond my knowledge. We do write coverage in other states but I have never heard of the drivers insurance being primary when driving another car.

Update... dalx19, you are right! He would have to file a claim with his insurance in order to get it fixed... Looks like I'm about to be $1500 lighter in the pockets:cryin

thread resurrection?

Actually I had a question of my own. I have Farmer's insurance in California. I downed my bike in the twisties. I was thinking about filing a claim with my insurance agent (no doubt it will be my fault). I'm pretty sure the damage will be around 1000. How much do you think my rates are going to go up? I have an 05 R1 the right side is jacked up. Thanks for any help.

Piny up the cash, or don't. I have been fixing mine bit by bit. (similar accident) and I have a perfectly clean Ins. record, so when I go down a bit harder it won't be claim #2. the less claims the better.
