I doubt you can drill and tap 8mm in there...better for you to try to find some place to replace the inserts instead.
Another way would be to try a proper sized tap (original pitch) then mount a "quick-release" setup with red loktite.
There are merely small bolts without heads with a hole drilled in them in which you insert a cutter pin.
