A friend of mine showed me how to shift without the clutch thursday. After I got the hang of it I thought I was Wayne Rainey or something. Is this a good thing or am I gonna screw something up? Remember I'm a newb so be gentle.

Are you talking about while just riding around or in a wheelie? Well it doesnt really matter,if you have the RPMs right and blip the throttle you will not hurt anything. I do not use the clutch most of the time after I am in second and never in a wheelie. DO NOT downshift without the clutch.

Now Twisted...................

You know damn well I got no business doin wheelies yet. ( I ain't trying to give my ex-wife none of my stuff for free ). Nah, just in regular riding. I've been doing it from first to second and so on. I noticed that when I do it , it's a lot smoother and it sounds a lot cooler too. And I promise never to downshift like this .:D

I always just listen to the motor, when I go out today I will watch the tach and see where I shift. You can drive a standard car the same way,if the RPMs are right you dont need the clutch to shift.

Yeah could you explain how to shift without the clutch. I think I know how to do it but I am not sure. When I ride with my boys they watch my clutch hand to know when I am about to jump out on them. I would love to eat them up and leave them waiting for my clutch hand to move. :rock The won't even know what happened until they catch up to me when I pull over. :machinegu

If you can walk and chew gum...........

You can do this. Twisted, once again last night I had to restrain myself. My shifting sounds way beyond my ability. Aitor : all I do is listen to the motor and when the revs get high I release throttle ever so slightly and get right back into it. Not hard but respectfully. I find that keeping my knuckles pointing up and wrist down is the perfect position. It will make you sound like you are a shifting god.

That sounds about right, when you get high into the RPM range just blip the throttle and up shift as the throttle is off the come right back on with the throttle. We are talking about 1second or less. If done correctly the shift will be as smooth or smoother than with the clutch

Sooner or later the tranny gears will not like you anymore. I was out today and for just crusing speeds after you are in second gear a good shifting point is between 6000-8000 rpm, remember that is crusing speeds

clutchless shift

I wasn't able to clutchless shift my 2002 yesterday. My bike only has 300 miles on it.....I always clutch my wheelies up to balance point and go.......I am doing wheelies under 6,000 RPM's. Is there a reason why my bike won't shift under full throttle? Do I need to be in higher RPM's to shift clutchless?

you can downshift without the clutch...all you need to do is let off the throttle completely and put downwards pressure on the shifter. DO NOT push down on it as if the clutch were in, just good pressure will suffice. Once the gears and rpm's line up right the shifter will fall down into place. The only time that I do this is when I coast up to a red light or a stop, but usually i just coast up there in neutral.

you DO NOT want to do this if you are downshifting to speed up.:n0t

Hmmmm.............

I'm not sure about full throttle but for sure you don't need to be way up in the revs for it to shift. I've done it as low as 3000rpm.

Alien, I would work on breaking in your bike first, you will then get to know that 02 better...... the gear ratio is a little different than previous years so get to know your bike before you start grinding gears........ I am no clutchless shifter expert but I have always found that the more you know your bike the more you learn when IT likes to be shifted...... Thats what your listening for, that sweet spot ya know;)

It doesn't matter what rpm your at really, I've been doing for about 5 years on my GIXXER, and when I picked up my R1 this weekend, it was the same way, I didn't even think about it.
I suggest to always use the clutch on the 1st to 2nd, but after that, just accelerate, and the gear box is under load, it doesn't matter what rpm your at, put slight pressure on the bottom of the shifter(it will not move if you are under throttle), when you reach the rpm you want to shift at, let off the throttle for a fraction of a second and then get back on it and the shift lever will move into the next gear. It works at any rpm. As soon as you unload the tranny, the shift lever will move.

My 02 R1 shifts clutchless very smoothly. I usually stop using the clutch after 3rd gear, and down shifting from 6-5, and 5-4 is also pretty smooth clutchless.

It's all about being smooth and decisive with the toe and wrist acting as one...:)
