The problem with them is the cheap amplifier and headphones they put in (i.e. the sound nearly perfect from the decoder but the sucky amplifier and headphones still make it sound bad).
For a long time I have an Intel "Pocket Concert" MP3 player, was not the cheapest but perfect amplifier and headphones -still no problem after years of abuse-.

I use the Sony Net MD player. About $130 and mini disks cost $1 each. You can also store up to 350 minutes of music on one disk. To me, I guess it is worth it...

Just another option, but I have a mini-disk player and love it. Never skips, the battery lasts forever, disks are cheap, and you can store tons of music on one disk....a lil cheaper than buying those memory cards.
