network problem...

hey,i have had my network working fine for 6 months. i have 2 computers on my network, a laptop and a PC(host). for some uknown reason i cannot access the PC from the laptop anymore. It just stopped working!

it says i dont have acces, to contact administrator, etc...the usual msg.

i have tried everything that i can think of. i have dont netork setup loads of times, done windows trouble shoot, deinstalled...reinstalled the lan cards on botch the PC and Laptop but to no evaill

anyone got any ideas?

can u ping the host from the laptop? What OS are you running on the Host/laptop? If it's W2K server, and your running a domain policy, u may have to reset the password on the laptop if your logging in on a domain....let us know

running XP pro, theres no server neither its just a simple direct cable connection. Did that help???

Id actually try linux but alot of my progs wudnt work on it im affraid

I'm not that predictable...

By direct cable connection, are you referring to using a null modem cable for the connection between the pc's? Or, a LAN cable between the two with NIC's?

By any chance is one or both of them setup with a DHCP address? If so, it might have changed.

NT/2000/XP:
From a command prompt type in: ipconfig

9x/Me:
From command or run line, type in: winipcfg

Whatever the IP address is on each box, try and ping that from the other.

If you get a timed out response, or something saying that nothing is working then you may need to look into drivers, or go so far as to completely remove your network stack and recreate it.

BTW, a great way to try linux is to download Knoppix. It's a cd-run, full-blown linux distrobution. :thumbup If you want to go further than that, you can install it onto either a separate partition or HDD. As to programs not working on Linux, we can address that if you decide to switch. :yesnod
