Hey guys
have 510kms on my R1 and the oil is damn ugl{grey and dark}
so I decided to change it with 20W40 Yamalube for now. And at my 1500km tune up I will bring it to dealership and get oil changed again and the big tune up all around.

Was it a good idea to change the oil at 500kms?
I know the book says 1000kms but it seem to dirty to me.

Thanks

Mine also seemed a little dirty for as few of miles I had on it. Plus it seemed a little overfilled from the dealer. So I changed the oil with Mobil 1 fully synthetic motorcycle oil and a KN oil filter. I have a little over 200 miles on the ODO.

Let me see if I understand what you just said....you have only 200 miles on your bike, and you already put in synthetic oil....If that is true, then I would change it out right now, and put conventional back in it!!!!

Hey
I put 20W40 Yamalube in it because I tought it was dirty.

But at the 1500kms super tune up I will put Bardhal 20W50 racing oil.

Oil was juste too dirty to wait at the recommended 1000kms

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Yamaha Lube Synthetic Blend? I think the fear of early life Synthetic is unfounded. Some vehicles are shipped from the factory with Synthetic (Ex. Corvette). Anyone have any proof that this is bad? At the very worst, it may take another 100 miles to break in, if in fact Sythetic reduces contact wear. There are a lot of 'old' technician tales still circulating. Another one, mixing synthetic with regular oil will cause it to gum up. However, as the tale goes, it is ok to change to sythetic, but you should never change back. Which rumor do we believe?

i believe and its also teh norm that you don't use syntetic during the break in. Not advisable at all. it has been said this topic has been for years.

The motor is 80% "broken-in" within the first 20 miles. Cylinder wall honing and ring technology is far advanced from what it was in the past. Don't believe me? There is no valid argument for waiting several hundreds of miles before making the change to synth oil like there was in years past.

Yes some of the most high performance (read expensive) cars in the world come with full synthetic oil from the factory. I dont know if they use a dino "Break-in" oil at the factory or not but if they do, the 200+ miles ive run should be more than enough to break in the motor. I also believe that 90% of your break in happens within the first 100 miles. I also feel the rings are seated way before that. I work in a factory that builds 4 cly engines for cars and I see metal shavings that get in there.

Ain't going to hurt anything changing it more often then reccomended... I change mine every 2k miles on street bikes, and generally every 2-3 track days on my track bike...
