I know for a fact that 03 and 04 filters are the same, don't know about the 02 though.

The same filter (PN 5GH-13440-00) fits 2000 thru 2004 R1's (as well as many other Yamaha models).

So, the dealer gave me a filter (part #: 3FV-13440-10) for my 2001. It says on the side of the carton "YZF-R1 '98-'99", among others (but no mention of '00-'01), is this is the wrong filter??

Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's the middle of the night and I was in the midst of changing the oil when I noticed this. Otherwise I'll have to wait a few days to finish.

Thanks in advance.

your 2001 takes a 5GH. Is the filter he gave you a yamaha brand or an off brand with a different part number?

Thanks for the quick response. It's a Yamaha Genuine filter, with the part number I mentioned before. Are you saying that a 98-99 should have a 5GH too?

Im not sure about 98,99 they might have been different, 2000 and 2001 are the same, 5GH
SteelR1, thanks for the info. I looked everywhere for the part number - Haynes guide, yamaha .pdf guide, checked the old filter (different brand), nothing.

Anyway, I guess I'm done for the night, back to the dealers in the morning.

The 98/99 uses the 3FV.

Up here in Canada, Yamaha is using the 3FV filter only. They say the 5GH has been discontinued. No rationale given but I started a thread on this subject under Mechanical help if you want to search for it for more details.
