On the Ohlins rear shock, there is the pheumatic preload adjustment. It allows a fine adjustment to preload on the bike.
Can the preload be changed in a more coarse manner, such as using a spanner tool? Or Does the shock have to be compressed to make more coarse preload adjustments?
Someone told me that you would have to compress the shock to change preload, which means that one only has the fine preload adjustment from the pneumatic adjuster. Hope I am making sense, and that someone can get me an answer for this.
I thought that all one has to do is loosen up the top preload collar (there are two - top and bottom one), and then just use the spanner wrench to put more or less preload on the spring, then tighten up the top collar again. Am I wrong?

there are teth on it like the stock shock i have never used this tho i always use the remote preload adjust but yes u can adjust it that way!!

I've got a 46PRXLB for my '07 about a week ago and still haven't installed it. So I have it in my hand and I have uploaded a photo. First, I'd say the adjuster is probably a worm/ring gear mechanical affair rather than pneumatic or hydraulic. No matter. Also, it looks like the body is threaded and not just grooves for a circlip. If you take a closer look at the photo you'll see a pin that ties the spanner nut to the preload adjustment mechanism. I'd say you wouldn't be able to rotate the spanner nut beyond the point where the mechanism contacts the reservoir unless you remove this pin first. I don't know exactly how the pin is retained but I would be a little leary about removing it in case you can't get it back in there properly.

I'd say its best to stick with the fine adjustment. Its a minor pain in the ass and shouldn't require much adjustment once a correct setting is determined for a given track or situation.

You can only use the fine tune adjustment with those adjusters. 04-06 shocks use hydraulic, the one in the pic above looks like a worm gear setup. Traxxion makes a collar that replaces the adjuster to give you a wider adjustment range. The fine tuners give only around 10mm or so. Taking the adjuster off requires a heavy duty spring compressor to remove the spring. I welded up a setup that worked ok. Once you install Traxxions manual adjuster changing spring rates in the future is much easier.

PS - you can still use the stock Ohlins setup but you need to remove the spring everytime to slide the hydraulic adjuster away from the locating pin.

Excellent information but I have to make a correction. These adjusters only change the spring preload. Spring rate for a coil spring is a function of spring geometry only. ;)

yes you can turn the adjuster with a spanner wrench just like any other shock, once you have it in the range then you can fine tune with the hydraulic preload adjuster

Cool. I will have to check this out, since some say it is preset until you compress the spring, while others say you can do this no problem.

I'd look at the owners manual if I could find one, because a friend of mine bought one and still has yet to chase down the owners manual.

The manual that came with mine is the same as the PDF on the Ohlins website. It is not the best documentation I have ever seen. It covers all motorcycle and shock models so it is very generic.

And, while I was there, I saw that there is a hydraulic version of the preload adjuster. Here is a picture, an installation manual for it as well as a copy of the owners manual.

Thanks! I had seen one of those, but not the longer of the two. I might stand a better chance of understanding them now. Thanks :thumbup
