I always thought it would be awesome to build my own go-cart with an R1 engine I could get out of a wrecked bike. Then I could build a body of a miniature Saleen S7 or McClaren F1 to go around it..
Is this possible, or did somebody beat me to it already?

I would do it too. I've already looked at stuff needed... like a go cart frame etc.
I already got an extra R1 engine but it is not working proberly. Would be a sweet project to have over the cold winter months.

Would there be any way in hell I could make it street legal? Aren't the only things you need stuff like a windsheild, turn signals, and brake lights or something?
Also, I don't know how to do it, but I'm sure it could be done, if it had AWD like an Eclipse GSX and if I needed more power I could just turbo the R1 engine.
Any comments?

do i like speed? :yesnod

Go-kart racing

Hey guys! Nice site.

I hope you are all enjoying riding your R1's.

Just to let you know that there is a racing class in the UK and South Africa that has cars that look like miniture Formula 1 cars powered by motorcycle engines.

They fly! I have driven one powered by an old 400cc 2-stroke motor. I spun out on the first corner. If you floor the gas and the car is not straight, all you will do is a successful 360 degrees!

I believe suzuki are setting up a formula in Japan that is powered by Hayabusa motors. That must be awesome!

About a month ago on Junkyard Wars, the competition was to build a dune buggy to race around a dirt/mud track. One of the teams built a sandrail and used a motorcycle engine, GSX-R engine I think...but that thing was pretty fast, the other team built a dune buggy type, using the rear end of a VW...the rail kicked it's ass..should look into that for ideas...I love that show..

Building a street legal custom car is a pretty involving project. It's far more then just needing a windshield, blinkers, and brake lights. There are numerous requirements on the entire construction of the vehicle. If you don't base it off a factory chassis, then you've got an entire book full of regulations on building and assembly. It can be done, but it is by no means easy. Done right though, you could have yourself an AWESOME vehicle.

If I were to take on such an endeavor myself though, I wouldn't stop at just using a motorcycle engine. I'd look towards the concept Norton motorcycle tried using on their Nemisis motorcycle (which was never produced). They were going to take a pair of suzuki 750 heads and custom fab a bottom end to make a 1400cc V8 that would make 275hp. Now, something like that would be super sweet in a real small sports car chassis. I think the problem they couldn't overcome though was building a V8 crank in the dimensions of those 750 heads that could handle the power. There just wasn't enough room to make a beefy enough crank. Still, the idea has a considerable amount of appeal.

Or how about this, two R1 engines, one powering the rear wheels and one powering the front wheels. With their size, this could easily fit into even the smallest of automobile chassis dimensions. Turbocharge each engine and you'r looking at over 400hp in an allwheel drive vehicle that could easily weigh less then 2000 pounds, maybe even less then 1500 pounds if you went a minimalist route on vehicle accomodations.

The car you speak of sounds like the Suzuki Shogun(I think that was what they called it)..it is owned by Jay Leno and was in one of the car magazines a few years back. It had 2 engines, one powered the left side and the other the right side...or was it front and back, man gonna have to look that one up, but anyways it was that same idea.

Speaking of motorcycle powered Formula cars check out our website. We are importing a car from Italy which runs the '97 YZF engine. This class is run spec in 7 European countries.

We are building a track up here in Edmonton to run shifters, bikes and these cars.

This will be the tracks first official year. We had a month last fall to test the first car.

some boys over here did it a couple of years ago. Took a International A class Go-Kart put a CBR 900RR motor in it and they couldn't get it to travel in a straight line.

i am building a go cart right now. frame built my me custom. and they engine came off a totaled 98 zx6r with 800 mile on it i have everything for the motor exept fuse box. so if anybody has one let me know [email protected] i took the front end from a 250r qaud for the hydrolic disc brakes. i am lookin to by a 1 3/4" cromoly axle for the back and she'll be rollin i've been working on it for about 2 years. i just put money in it whenever i can. i have a formula 1 body for it but it needs some body work done to it ti make it fit the frame. not to mention the roll bar 130mph in a go cart i'll probably shit my pants.
