R1 Tranny problem

Hey everyone:hellobye , yesterday I was practicing 1st gear wheelies for 1.5 hrs with a consistent temperature of 200-210 f. When I finished, I started to ride home and noticed 10 minutes later that getting the tranny in neutral was becoming tricky; when in 2nd gear I would push down to get neutral and it would skip into 1st and vice versa from 1st to 2nd. I also noticed when i'm stopped holding the clutch in for 10 seconds, I would put it in 1st and it would clunk. Now I know this is normal if you just pressed the clutch in a second ago, but not when holding it in for 10 seconds. Also when stopped, neutral was hard to find and 2nd would clunk aswell (while stopped, just goin through the gears). Now I was beating the bike up for an hour, but I wasn't shifting into 2nd, but I was using the rear brake alot 2 slow down. The bike runs fine, no problems shifting it into gear, just this harder clunk in 1st and 2nd, and like I said before, it's harder now to get it in neutral since it skips in the next gear. What is your take on this if any?

both my old R6 and 2k2 R1 had that same thing, its just the Yamaha trannys d00d, don't worry bout it
So are Yamaha tranny's generally shitty or what? Who has the best tranny? I would guess honda.
My second gear is a bitch to get it into when im high in the revs out of first, a couple of times it has completly droped out of second on me. Hopefully it will get better with some miles..
Yamaha are tranny's are not shitty. They are actually pretty good when you think about the kind of abuse they take. I don't have any problem going into neutral but sometimes into second when i am high rpm I willmiss the shift and instead of getting second I hit neutral. Think it's my timing when letting out the clutch. So thats probably my bad and not the bike. Can't really explain why you are having trouble finding neutral but if all else is good then I would not worry to much till you start to have other problems. If your worried then keep checking ebay. I have seen 2 trannies on there in the past few months. They have been going pretty cheap so maybe you can pick up a spare one just in case. Especially if you are going to be practicing wheelies so much.
Were you clutching your wheelies?

When putting a lot of strain on the clutch you will heat it up and the exact problems you were having will start to happen. This occurs anytime you clutch a bunch of wheelies or clutch burnouts - or anything of the sort. You will end up burning out your clutch and you may find that you'll be replacing it real soon. If you weren't clutching the wheelies - then I suggest you check your clutch play. As the bike gets hot the clutch cable has a tendancy to 'readjust' and can actually be tighter - causing the clutch to never be fully engaged - which of course causes some slipping and heats up the clutch.

No matter what - hopefully the problem is gone now that the bike has had a chance to cool down - but there is a good chance that a new clutch is in your future!

I also suggest that you don't clutch your wheelies or burnouts if you are going to be doing a lot in a short amount of time! :)

And while you're at it - when you continue practicing the wheelies, don't power shift from 1st to 2nd (Always try to be easy from 1st to 2nd if you can be). It puts a lot of strain on the transmission and starts to round off the dogs (especially doing wheelies where there is very high load). The dogs are responsible for driving the gears around, and as they get worn, they round off and 2nd gear will start to skip on you, sometimes just popping back into neutral. This isn't a Yamaha problem, as all Gixxer's and Honda's do the same thing (I have friends with all the above that have all replaced their 2nd gears). The Yamaha transmission is very good - but like all of them - not perfect!

I didn't even attempt 2 go into 2nd gear. I was just practicing take-offs and trying 2 hold in up in first gear. I never used the clutch. I was just using the rear brake 2 slow it down and then I would gun it between 4-5K rpm 2 bring it up again. I took it around the block last night and it still does it. While stopped in neutral, I put it in 2nd and I get the jolt we normally experience when puttin it in 1st gear. My tranny shifts fine, no probs there, just getting into neutral is trickier and the jolt is harder now when I put it in 1st or 2nd........I just want it 2 run like butter(b4 thursday it was fine), but maybe it wasn't meant 2 B this way?:cryin
wheelies

don't pay

there hard on your bike and your wallet!

I just ride fast...:D
i agree with u eddyr1, they come with 2 wheels may as well use them both!!!
Wish I could help - but I have no idea... I've seen a lot of "hot clutch" problems - but never seen/heard of any problems from just practicing the 1st gear wheelies.....

Sorry man!
Well, I think it's back 2 normal now. Not sure what really happened but it fixed itself last night, sort of. It's not doin it as much. I do appreciate every1's input though, TY very much!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep every1 posted:thumbup

I guess I thought the prob was gone cuz I only rode it around the block, but 2day I took it 4 a spin and it got even worse. I checked my chain and it has over 1.5 inches of slack. I also read in a past post that this may be the culprit and i'm hoping it is. I think this may be the problem since I was lifting the front wheel numerous times in 1st gear only and this stretched my chain out. Last time I checked it had about 1/4 inch of play. Please god, if ur up there, let it be my chain. I do not have $ 2 fix tranny or clutch right now...

OHHHH I almost 4 got 2 mention, one of the bolts that hold the kickstand is missing. What the hell happened 2 it. I guess it fell off or something. Gotta get that fixed aswell, I know their was a recall on the 99 kickstands...

Well tomorrow morning i'm goin 2 the cycle shop 2 get my chain tightened. I will fill every1 in around 11:30 am/eastern time. I am so depressed 2day:cryin

What is the regular chain slack in inches by the way?
