Hey guys, after thinking long and hard about it I've decided to get the R6 instead of the R1 for my own good. It will be my first street bike (have ridden motocross since 12) and I figured I need a little more room for error while I learn the ways of the street rider. But anyway... Is there anything I should know before I get the R6, anything to check or specifically ask for before I hand them the cash? Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :hellobye

If its brand new, no. See if you can get them to throw in your 600 mile service for free when you buy the bike. Worth a shot, worse they can say is NO.

I ran my brand new 2001 R6 for a year and put 6500 miles on it including 1200 in 4 days to Le Mans (24 hour car race) and back (along with 4 mates - 2 'Blades and 2 Ninja's). Never missed a beat and I still miss the noise of the Termignoni pipe I fitted - especially through long tunnels.

Incidentally - the 600 mile service is free in the UK. You get your eyes sucked out at every service thereafter though!

Please take it steady at first, as, unlike the 2002 R1, the R6 likes to be revved hard in all gears and, whilst it is nowhere near as much of a handful as early R1's, it still commands respect.

Enjoy. I still miss mine. Lots.

Marc

Do I need to check and torque any screws? Are the clip ons known to be loose like the R1?

I have been hanging out at the R6 forum lately doing research on the R6 before i buy it. A ton of guys are saying their clip-on bolts are coming loose or falling out all together. It is an easy fix though, just remove them, loctite them, and re-install. Probably only like 10min. of your time. Besides that, i haven't heard any other defects, and i want mine real bad.

Never had a problem with anything loose (other my bowels once or twice) on mine. Everything was tighter than a senior nun's tight bits.

Get it bought, get on it and twist. Stop swithering man.

As we say in the north of England - piss, or get off the pot.

Pleasure buddy. Went for a blast on my R1 tonight. 141 mph before I ran out of road. Need a steering damper and soon as there was some 'head shaking' going on over some bumps you woudn't notice if you walked over them. Fairly mild on their own but hitting 2-3 of them is not on my 'to-do' list.

Despite some serious work commitments and terrible weather I have managed to rack up 2000 miles since March 8th.

miss my R6 bad! only had it for 4 mos, (my starter bike), love my R1 also. My advise, respect the 6, it'll buck ya. Be safe & have fun.
P.S. this is my first reply or post. All that read. This is a great forum. Thanks!! I know, I'm probably considered a squid, but, it's all good, if I die on my R1, I looked good doing it!:lol

One more question... This is my favorite forum no doubt about it, but is there an R6 forum? And if so, what's the best one? If I can find out as much about R6's as I did about R1's on here then I'll be set. :thumbup

I have over 14k miles on my 01 R6. The only problems I have encountered are with my second gear. I think that was mainly from wheelies. It is a great bike and I'm sure you'll love it. Good luck!
