I need to reload about 3 computers (not mine, but family friend's due to viruses) over the next couple of weeks, all of which use Outlook Express...

I know you can export it to Outlook (not Express), and others. but, doing so doesn't allow you to reimport it back into Outlook Express.

I've exported the favorites, and the address book, but can't figure out which directory I need to keep to save Outlook Express. I did search on the knowledge base for Microsoft's website, but didn't see anything pertaining to this. Ideas?

If you are using XP, OE saves all the emails in "C:\Documents and Settings\logged in name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{041771C2-667E-4B16-BFF7-E62D998933E9}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"

All you need to do is take the OE folder at this location and place it in the same spot on whatever comp you want and all the emails will be retained. You could also just go in the OE folder and grab whichever file you need and do the same. More than likely it would be the Inbox file you want.

Thanks. I tried digging down thru, but didn't see much like that. BTW, this is happening on a W2k, 98/Me and I think an XP box. But, should be the same or relatively close.

Yeah, pretty messed up the way windows xp buries this. Don't know why it just doesn't default somewhere easy like my documents or something.

I always push my installs, favorites, and mail to another partition so it's easy to find. That way I can just reload my c drive then redirect everything to the other partition and be right back where I was pretty quickly. Makes for easy reloads.

Here is a shot of my folder, give you an idea of what files you are looking for:

Yep, that's the first thing that I enabled when I started working on it. It was a matter of looking in the wrong spot, putting in a 20 hour day yesterday and another 8 today for work, and a number of other things going on that was preventing me from finding it.

On my Linux box, it's simple:

~/Mail

And people say Linux is hard... :crash

It's all a pain in the arse...

If these systems have enough drive space, after I'm done I'm making Ghost images and putting to another partition. :thumbup

Okay, so I saved the Outlook Express folder so I could save all of their email. They were logged in before as Administrator. Which, I created a different account for their day to day stuff and after upgrading the system, went to put the OE folder back.

There wasn't a c:\documents and settings\loginname\local settings\App* Data\Identities\{all kinds of funky numbers}\Micosoft directory so I created it, then dropped in the Outlook Express folder.

So, it's there, but I can't see any old e-mails. Any ideas? :dunno

make it more simple. u search for *.dbx files, copy it out and put in one folder (as u say u want to back it up).

Then wit new profile/email set on Outlook Express u go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab. And u can see Store Folders, click on that and next click on Change... button.

After that jus change the path to the folder tat contain the *.dbx files (u jus copied). Click OK when prompt u. now close and open the OE again. there are ur msges.
