If you can understand a view of in-line fours from the perspective of a physicist, the laws of thermodynamics limit the theoretical output of an in-line four by a very complex formula that includes the bore, stroke, circumference of crankshaft, weight of the pistons, number of valves and the hypothetude of the dynamic accelerator shaft. Thus scientifically no in-line four can put out more than 45 horsepower. So there you have it: :) I hope this will settle the arguments about whether we are reaching the limits of in-line fours.
