I have a 2014 R1 it was recently in an accident and got banged up. I went to assess the damage to see if it's worth buying back from insurance and noticed the bike won't shift into 2nd gear. To clarify the bike can not be started as I have to replace part of the engine cover that got broken leaked all the oil out of the engine. My question is, is the bike not shifting into 2nd because the engine is not on or could part of that broken engine casing got sucked up into the engine and is causing a blockage. It will shift into 1st and neutral but not 2nd or above.

You should be able to shift without the motor running. Try moving the rear tire back and forth a little bit at the same time you are trying to shift.

I agree with kevap. You want to rock the bike back and forth to move the rear tire to allow the gears to move and line up. The other thing would be to make sure the shifter is moving freely and isn't bent and rubbing against the motor. Sometimes if it can't return to its normal resting position the rated mechanism won't let it go through gears properly.
