Here is a clip from an XP tweak guide a friend of mine typed up:

--------------------
Services
--------------------
Services are programs that run in the background. Services load and start before you actually log into Windows. There will probably not be much of a performance increase by disabling these. If you need more information on what each of these does visit this site:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Start | Run | type "services.msc"
set the following to DISABLED:
- Alerter *NEW
- Automatic Updates
- Background Intelligent File Transfer *NEW
- Clipbook *NEW
- Distributed Link Tracking Client
- Error Reporting Service
- Fast User Switching Compatibility
- IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service **
- Indexing Service
- Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
- Messenger
- MS Software Shadow Copy Provider
- Net Logon
- NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
- Network DDE *NEW
- Network DDE DSDM *NEW
- Network Location Awareness (NLA)
- Portable Media Serial Number
- Protected Storage *NEW (optional - don't disable it if you use AutoComplete)
- QoS RSVP *NEW
- Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
- Remote Registry
- Routing and Remote Access
- Secondary Logon
- Smart Card
- Smart Card Helper
- SSDP Discovery Service
- System Restore Service
- Task Scheduler
- TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper *NEW
- Telnet
- Terminal Services
- Themes
- Uninterruptible Power Supply
- Upload Manager
- Volume Shadow Copy
- Wireless Zero Configuration

** When you load up Nero, it may be slow "Scaning SCSI/IDE-Bus Pleast Wait...". This is because XP also uses the CD-RW Drive. If you do not use the built-in CD Recording feature, disable it, so Nero can load up faster.

The following services are being evaluated to determine of they are really needed or not:
- IPSEC Services
- WebClient

How is your video card in other situations? Video driver loaded and up to date? What kind of card is it?

I just noticed this, but when i have small windows opened, moving them accross the screen creates the same hesitation as well. As far as my video card goes....if i can remember right maybe a g-force II from nvidia.

got too much shit runnin in the background mang...hoggin up your computer's attention...

see all that shit in the bottom right corner of your screen on the taskbar? Right click the icons, one at a time, and hit "exit" or "close"

...you are right about closing processes in your task manager...figure out which are non-essential and viruses you prolly have and kill them.

Download winpatrol from www.winpatrol.com.
Download spybot-sd from www.safer-networking.org.
Get Symantec anti-virus, formerly Nortons.
Stop surfing bestiality porn, only use the reputable porn sites.
Good luck on taking back your computer.

If you are not too sure about what video card you have, then
I bet you are running an old driver. Go to www.nVidia.com and download the latest driver for your card. Verify the dates before and after. Go into the device manager and look at the video driver properties and see what the release date of the driver you curently have installed. After the update, look again at the date to make sure the update installed.
