Where is the speedo pickup on the 04? Every bike that I have seen has it on the front wheel.

off the countershaft.

It's driven off the tranny, the setup is much like a ABS brake setup with a sun gear going past a magnetic field to create the speedo pulse. Sprocket changes will affect the indicated reading because the sensor if further up the pipe.
