Already have a screw in my tire - about 2 inches right of the center on the rear. very very slow leak - I rode her home and put her up on the swing arm stand. I need to get a fucking tire alreadY!! can you believe that!!! Can you think of any way to get a really good discount on a tire? any chance you think my dealer would give me a tire and just say there was a flat when it shipped or something?

Scud, that sucks! It happened to me last summer. To add insult to injury, I bent the rim on the way home. :( :(

I really doubt anyone is going to buy the defective tire line. Basically, you're screwed (sorry, couldn't resist :) ).

I suggest......Race takeoff! You could dismount and have it patched, kinda sketchy, but If you must....

Now you get the joy of not being able to find the exact same tire.

I finally decided to put 207GPs on front and rear since I couldn't get plain 208s, and I didn't think the 208 GPs are worth the differnce.

How many miles did you have? I had 260 when I picked up a 14 penny nail through the side of the tread pattern.

I'm probably going to start some heated debate but I'll say it anyway....I've run a plugged tire on occassion. I had a brand new 204 on my F3 several years ago and picked up a large screw in the rear tire, dead center. I researched it around and talked to my shop and bike mechanic buddies and they said as long as you're not drag racing or going over 150mph you'd be fine. They said you'd loose a speed rating on the tire going by rule of thumb. My shop plugs tires all the time and guarantees they'll hold air. I plugged many tires when I worked at that dealership and never had one come back. I never had any problems with the ones I ran, but wouldn't recommend it if the tire has any sidewall damage.

its a risk...

Hoenstly, I don't think I wanna mess with a plug - I know some guys swear by them - but since it's gonna cost me 60 bucks to have it remounted anyway, I figure I might as well do the right thing and get a new tire...

my logic is, since it's the break in, keeping a plugged tire wouldn't be sooooo bad, cause I won't be pushing the bike too much - but once that 1000 miles is on, I'm gonna have to get a new tire anyway - so then pay another 60 bucks!!!! makes no sense.

stupid question: On the 02, once shes up on the swingarm stand, if you remove the axle, how many spacers and what not are there - 2) do you have to back in the chain adjustment nuts to allow the wheel to move forward to get the chain off, or will it have enough room without backing them in? lastly, I'm guessing the caliper doesn't have to be unscrewed right? it should just drop right out?

I picked up 2, that's right, 2- 4 inch nails within 2 inches of each other on my D208 on the way home from 600 mile service. The tire had about 610 mile on it. I plugged both holes myself for under $5, and now have 1150 miles on the tire...no problems. I am a little hesitant to take the bike over 150 mph with the plugs though. My tire is wearing pretty fast so I will just let it wear on out then top my 02 R1 out after I replace this tire. My bike is only 3 weeks old so I figure it won't be too long before I need a new tire anyway.:thumbup

scud....i had the same doubts and issues about plugging as you now do. The plugs I used look like two pieces of cord that are entwined and coated with some thick, VERY sticky adhesive. What they do is pull the nail out, take a plug plunger/spike and run it thru the hole a couple times, then run it back thru with the plug. It'll stick about an inch out of the hole, but will wear down to size after some riding. I did some very fast, hard riding thru the twisties with plugs with no problems and got almost 6000 miles off the tire. I'd try it, I wouldn't worry about tire failure b/c the sidewalls aren't damaged. Many dealers won't plug b/c of the liability and sue happy culture we live in, but you can easily do it yourself cheaply. You can find the kits at any Autozone or NAPA type store.

what worries me...

...is that the tire didn't get puncture by a nail - it is a screw....a small screw (or so it looks) but I'm worried because I don't know if the threads on the screw might have done more structural damage on the way in (unlike a nail which is smooth)

anyone have some input here...Loki, I appreciate your help so far - I just feel like I'd rather have as many people's opinons on this as possible...I'll be getting a new tire at about 1000 miles anyway, but I'm wondering even with a SCREW puncture, should I plug up the tire just for the remainder of the break in,....

my last one was a very large/thick sheet metal screw, easily the width of 2 nails. threads don't make any difference, the hole is reamed out anyway with the plunger b/f the plug goes in. that smoothes out any rough edges in the hole. if it takes more than one plug to seal the hole, the hole's too big. atv's and dirtbikes are a whole different story.....

Good luck!

SCUD

If it were mine I would just pull the wheel off and go have someone patch/plug it. It really is not that big of a deal. I you plug it make sure and cut off the excess that sticks out of the tire. This is to keep it from pulling it's self out under acceleration.

Truth be told you seem very worried about plugging the tire, and if for no other reason than your piece of mind you will be best off getting a new tire. There is no way in hell I would pay $60 for someone to mount and balance a tire.

At the shop I work at we charge $30 to mount and balance if you bring in the bike, and $10 if you bring in the wheel only. We charge $5 more if you bring in your own tire to put on.

Find a smaller dealer in your area, they will be more likely to patch the tire and have more reasonable rates.
I wish you the best of luck with your new bike :)

My 2 cents

I've been AMAZINGLY lucky with flats over all these years;) Only had 1, that was summer before last on a brand new rear just scrubbed in, about 80 miles from home on one of our twisty mtn loops. Picked up a rock exiting a corner hard on the gas, and it magically inserted itself:p Called my wife, had her hook up the trailor and come pick me up. The tire? I never hesitated. Threw it away and got a new one. I don't EVER want to worry about a tire, to me that's false economy, and we hardly ever  have a ride here where you don't bust it up over 150 a time or 2, during a normal ride, eh ?;)

Absolutely right!!!

I agree - and therefore, I ended up getting a 180/55 dunlop 207zr. shit happens right? I do think I could've eeked out a patch for a while- through the break in anyway - however around here they charge so damn much just to remount a tire (60-70 bucks, yes- it does suck) I figured **** it- for another 100 I might as well not even have it on my mind.

yesteday was some day - first i went to traffic court to fight 2 bullshit tickets from my car - took 18 months to get the court date and luckily and got out of them, the judge laughed.

2) realized after I got home from court that i lost my wallet EEK - everyone: DONT EVER LOSE YOUR WALLET.

3) spent rest of day screaming all over the place in my car (bike dealer for tire, DMV for documents, phoned all credit cards...YUCK)

what a fucking day. at least i have a new tire ready to go.
