The video "Mach 2" from SBFreaks registered a clean 200 mph on the digital speedo. Actual radar clock speed in the same film was like 178.

Does anyone know why there is such a big difference between digtal speedo speed and actual speed?

I know changing rims/tires on cars affect speedo on cars but i wouldn't expect this from a stock bike?

Well, i've been riding 4 about 4 months now, and I've been itching 2 get the speedo higher and higher everytime I get on the highway. I went down 2 Edison on saturday, gorgeous out BTW (little windy though). I was on the NJ Turnpike by Newark Airport. U guys know that straight away that runs parallel 2 the airport, well it's made 4 topspeedin if U ask me. So I brought it up 2 135mph on my way south, got off on exit 10. Then on my way back up north, I decided 2 push it a little further. I hit 152 mph headin north bound by Ikea this time. Dude, when I was done speedin', I just wanted 2 cruise. I felt like I had a near death xperience so I just cruised after that. But next time i'm gonna try 160 mph. Whats the top speed on an R1 with stock gearing. Also, whats the top speed if u go up 2 teeth in back, then up 1 in front. Do u lose alot?:thumbup

on my 02 i have had it at 170 flat so far i was passed by a 99 R1 with a true reading and he had to pass me at 177 the easiest way and cheapest way to get a true reading is with a digital bicycle computer for about $30 just got to your bicycle shop and buy one it keeps your top speed how many miles and time and a few other things just straps on your handlebar and then you run a wire down your fork and glue a magnet to your wheel easy as pie:rock

310 kmh one way,309 the other way on the same highway(so that makes it accurate)before the last year mods and this year mods...lol

with a bit of gearing change,i"m pretty confident that i could easily break the 200mph barrier, but the gearing would then be worthless for the remaining 99% of my riding.

i"m happy with potential.

Well

It's hard to believe a lot of you guys have speedos that are SO FAR out:bs A good running stock 98 or 99 with a smallish rider ( I am ) tucked in well would do a radar indicated 173mph while showing 178 on the digital. This is stock gearing, 16f/43r and stock 207's with the 190 rear. That seems about right. I've had mine, when still stock to an INDICATED 178 half a dozen times or so, it felt like maybe it had a little more left, but each time I did this I was coming to a spot where getting out of the throttle seemed to be a prudent thing;) With 13 more rwhp now I MIGHT expect it to pop over an indicated 180, and MAYBE it will get over a true 175, but I wouldn't expect much, if any more top speed.
The only thing I can imagine with such a wide range of readings is one of three things. # 1 ) a difference in tire height and circumferences # 2 ) some REALLY built motors, or the fella' with the turbo;) or #4 ) Other than Martini you guys haven't figured out how to switch from Kpm to MPH:D Sorry, it seems like total:bs to me. I'm always ready to learn something new though, so tell me why my old beat up 99' is such a stone?:lol Hey, I'm not trying to flame anyone here, but like Joe Friday used to say on Dragnet , " The facts Mam, Just the facts ";)

Check out C&D

Check out htis month's Car & Driver, that talkas about regulations for speedos. The regs that that they can never indicate speeds below actual speed (even if you swap tires!).

the Yellowbox is supposed to have some magic that makes your speedo accurate, from www.blackrobotics.com, although I wonder how the hell it knows how to calibrate your speedi without some external input.

the dog has spoken...

Olddog I'm so with you - after last weeks debacle with some other kook fucking squid, I decided not to get into this one, I wouldn't want anyone else crying because I used the :bs in good fun. But I totally agree - my 00 would just about get to 182 or so, which equate to a tad over 170 - However I have to add 1 category to your "ways to go faster" cookbook - I've seen a geared 01 with full hindle and carb work dust me up pretty good on the ocean parkway - by the time I got up to 165, he was already pulling away reasonably quickly- spoke to the guy out at OBI later and he claims to able to get 190/192 with a slight tailwind - I believe this because I saw how fast he kept pulling after I was leveling off...

That's just the way it is on almost every bike. The speedo is actually a little electronic sensor on the front sproket. (least' it was on my 01 Gix 600, I assume the R1 is no different). The front sprocket IS turning fast enough to generate a true 200 mph or whatever. Problem is, you're putting out so much power that your rear is actually skipping and sliding on the pavement. Therefore, your wheel IS turning that fast, but due to the losses from traction, your actual ground speed is generally about 10% lower. This actually happens in a car also, but because you don't usually take a car over 100 mph, it's much less pronounced.

As far as I know, bike speedos are calibrated to read true at "highway" speed, but I think they interperet this as about 55 mph. You can get a device called a "yellow box" (just do a yahoo search on it or something) and it's about $100. It's the size of a pager and you plug it between your computer and your speedo sensor, and it actually calibrates your speed. You go out and run like 5 mile markers at say, 100 mph, then you see how far off your odomitor is. Usually it will read like 5.3 miles instead of true 5.0. Then you calibrate the yellow box to compensate for that .3 mile, then your speedo is dead on at 100 mph. A little low below that, and a little high above that.

Yeah, if he is making ENOUGH hp to pull the gearing with a little motorwork it is possible. Up above about 160mph or so the hp required to overcome drag and rolling resistance changes substantially. To even pull the stock gearing into redline in 6th takes a concerted effort on the riders part. I understand discrepencies in individual models units, say a range of indicated 5 mph one way or the other, but It's hard to understand such LARGE differences:confused:
I've done this too long to just listen without commenting on the speedo inacuracy thing. Yeah, they are inacurate and optomistic, but mine is , evidently, not nearly as optomistic as many;) Again, maybe my bikes a stone:butt :lol

If the speedo is reading 178 then that would be a true 160mph or so. . It's funny how people have one track minds. Just because you can't do something means no one can. What is that?? .

Hey Clova

What's wrong? A little honesty on the subject too much for you? Too bad. Guys that tell big stories might expect a little honest talking on the subject.
If my speedo was as inacurate as yours I would seek a remedy. Be a big boy now, and don't get your undies all bunched up:cryin OK? The first time a buddy of yours goes by on a gixxer 1000 at a real 179-182 and you are showing 187 or whatever as he steams by, thay'll give you a clue. I'm NOT knocking you or your bike, just telling you that your speedo is off bad if that's what you are really seeing.:makeout
