I am looking to buy a used motor, as my 01 is having 2nd gear issues. I have seen some locally and on flea-bay. My concern is that I don't get a stolen motor. How can I check the numbers and see if it would match a stolen bike. I have a cop who will run the vin and let me know if its stolen or not. But is the motor number the same as the vin number or do they match at all, or how can I tell?

They are different numbers and both can be registered stolen. give your Friend the cop the numbers and he can check the motor too, or call your local Auto Theft Task force....or whatever MO calls that department and they can run the Engine #'s too. i know from experience cause i did the same thing your doing and found out that the motor i was looking to buy was "Hott" from San Antonio! 2 hours from me. so yes be careful! Even the DPS office can check the #'s too
