No index page...the webserver is then set to view (by default) the directory listing of where the index page is to be located, but the admin has the directory listing turned off...so you get that message.

Is it common for it to drop the specified index page without any changes? Easy to fix?
Common is relative...for it to randomly do what it's doing is pretty rare. My guess is that either the index.asp/htm/html/whatever page was removed or that the webserver settings were changed so that it does not autoload an index page.

A 403 error is a permission issue. You have no access or rights to that part of the web site. Either you aren't typing the fully URL to the site and page you are looking for, or you don't have access to the page or area you are attempting to access. First make sure you have the correct URL address.
