My 02 R1 now has 1650 miles on it, and all of a sudden it makes a weird noise from the fork just below the handlebars. It happens when you brake hard, or I can do it just braking and pressing the front end down sitting still. It sounds like a squeeking, rubbing noise, almost grinding, with a little bit of a pop to it. It sounds like something is loose. I think I will take it to my dealer and let them look into it. If anybody else has had this problem though I would appreciate a response.

Hey I had the same noise and the bolts holding the right handle bar where missing (2) thank god I just took out the bike for the first time the security bolt was holding everything together and I had the same noise but I haven't noticed it again unless its your front shock.

I'm getting the same thing, but only a pop or clunk and none of the other associated noises. I checked all the bolts, and everything is tight. If I find out anything during further inspection, I'll let you know.

2 possible thing:

1-the noise is coming from the calipers(rare)

2-the most probable cause:loose neck bearings;
the crack and pop sound(under braking on less than perfect asphalt or when applying brakes when backing up the bike by foot-try that, this is the ultimate test)is due to the yamaha arrangement(not sure if its still like that on the 02 though)collar/rubber washer/collar...i took the rubber collar off on mine.

martinc,

My bike DOES pop when backing by foot as you described. I already checked the "head nut" and it was tight. Should this be something the dealer needs to deal with (bike is under warranty) or should I go ahead and remove the rubber collar? (which I assume is under the top triple clamp)

Martin I put the put a Sprint top mount damper on when I first got my bike and retightened the head bolt myself, so I know it is VERY tight! This almost sounds like loose bolts that are allowing a sliding type friction to take place between 2 coarse pieces of bike? It souns like right around the area where the 2 bolts that hold the front fairing stay to the frame are, but they are tight. Whatever the case, it is somewhere below the handlebars, but above the bottom of the fairing, in other words...it is not low in the fork. It is somewhere in the area just behind the headlights, etc. Oh well, I have an appointment at the shop tomorrow, maybe they can figure it out I'll be sure to post what they find.

lol,you"re both wrong!

the top nut is not the culprit, its the 2 locking collars under the triple clamps that are loose!

yep,you got to take off the top clamp risking scratches, etc then loosen the top collar, tighten the bottom collar to specs, tighten back the top collar to specs, then put back the top clamp and everything in its place;the procedure is weird also since it consist on tightening and loosening....good luck and happy swearing.

Well recently I have noticed a noise also from my bike. But this was after I removed the tank and airbox. It's almost like plastic rubbing against somethign. I hear it on bumps and breaking and acceleration. I'm thinking that since I pulled the tank and airbox that maybe some of the hoses settled a bit differantly and now are rubbing against some stuff. Nothing feels loose or differant when I ride. But god the noise is anoying. It's not loud or anything just annoying.

My dealership couldn't find the problem, I fussed and told them this has to be fixed. I then got home and read your answer Martin and called them, they said that sounds like what my problem is. They are going to try checking this under the triple clamp. Thanks. :yesnod

torque specs!!!triple clamps problems

here"s what i got...good for 98 to 01:

top triple clamp nut:85ft-lbs

lower ring nut(collar under the triple):21ft-lbs

upper ring nut:6.5ft-lbs

when you"ve just disassmbled the top clamp, the first ring nut would be the upper...then there"s the rubber groomet/washer,then the lower ring nut.

since you have to disassemble all those things, here"s their torque specs too:

upper clamp pinch bolts:17ft-lbs

clipon pinch bolts:13ft-lbs

lower clamp bolt(you dont have to,but hey,you got this one also):17ft-lbs

clipons locating bolts(under plastic cap):9.5ft-lbs

brake/clutch assembly bolts:9.5ft-lbs

bar ends(extra one too,lol):3ft-lbs

just checked the workshop manual...

seem to be a direct japanese-english translation...obscure with half words.

it goes like this:

"First, tighten the ring nut to 28nm(21ft-lbs) then loosen it completely(note:probably to seat everything);then, retighten the ring nut to specs.(9nm or 6.5ft-lbs)

mmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Blove, I haven't gotten mine fixed yet, but R1 #36 Silver did, and he said it was the jam nut for the bearings in the steering head. His doesn't do it anymore. The bolt had backed itself out.
