Went for a five hour, 181 mi. ride today. Rock Store and Newcomb's.

At certain moments, I thought I heard some popping out of the exhaust on decel. Is this possible?

And:

1) What causes this — or any — popping: a rich condition or a lean condition?

2) Why isn't the FI preventing this?

3) Perhaps because when the throttle is cracked closed, there is no FI working, but there still some fuel moving through the intake-combustion-exhaust circuit?

4) Does popping occur in the muffler or the header or where?

Thoughts?

My best,

Mark

P.S. Saw lots of cool rides today, including two stock '04 R1s.

Droog, baby. I said stock.

Put your cheaters on.
Doesn't necessarily mean your mapping is correct.

BTW, bikes can pop when they are lean or rich.

Lord Budha,

Well, if the factory screwed up the mapping, how is little ol' me supposed to fix it?

By the way, the popping was so minimal, I do not think it was anything. For example, when I _tried_ to make it pop, it wouldn't.

the popping is happening in the muffler and is normal ..if you get a
slip on muffler you will really notice it ..mine makes a nice boom on decel.

Some people just don't want help

FYI, your dealership can adjust your fuelling if it's off. That's what they're there for.

People living at extremely high altitude often have your problem.

The AIS adds to this as well. I removed it and plugged the holes and my 02 doesn't pop nearly as much as it used to. It an easy mod to do, if you plan on getting a full system, you will have easy access to this.

Sounds like you're too lean. A remapping should fix that.

Speed,

So what you're saying is that it is normal. It comes from the factory that way.

That's all I need to know.

Nice avatar, by the way.

I can't remember 100% but I didn't think the 2002+ R1's had AIS.

Yeah, the popping is definitely from extra air being dumped into your exhaust from the AIS. All 02-03 R1s do this. I removed my AIS a month ago, and about 90% of the popping stopped (I also have a full exhaust system). The link above tells you how to remove it. Do a search for AIS removal, and your problem is solved. Good luck!
