After getting some experience on an R6 would an R1 be a realistic goal for me?
Define "some experience".
Define a "realistic goal".
And better, state how fast and how safe do you want to learn.
"Some experience" = 10,000 miles -> you're good to go on the R1 if you wish to. Just take the time to adjust yourself the new bike, and be extra cautious.
"Some experience" = 200 miles -> you have NO experience, and get it in your head FAST before you think you know something and the bike will help you discover you don't, but the hard way.. And read the following.
"realistic goal" = "being able to roll the throttle without sh!tting my pants" -> any child is, after an hour in the saddle.
If you are new and want to learn safely and FAST - get away from both and go buy Ninja 500, stick with it for a year, scrape the exhausts on this thing, sell it, buy whatever you want.
I promise you that in this year you'll be kicking a$$ of people like number1_kid (just jumped in with a "really good" suggestion, making himself a good target) in any set of good twisties, whatever these people will be riding, with your small Ninja. It'll take them much longer to acquire the same skill.
If you can't stand the thought of being on a lowly 500 - go get an R6, still much better than R1. And read the NEWBIE thread.
Ah.. forgot. Size. My friend can barely touch the ground with both legs simultaneously on my R1 (I flatfoot it), but he can control the bike. He's 165 cm (sorry, too tired to translate the values)
