I bet you'll miss the snap of that '98

Keep her!

She's a classic!!!!!!!!!!!

if your goin to screw the budget, could you imagine what you would have if you put all that money into the bike you allready have?, that would be the way to go, just modd the shit out of your bike, make it full race, you'll fell like a million bucks when you blow past somebody on a new rc51 or whatever they may be riding!:machinegu

I didnt vote cause I say keep the bike. RC-51? Why dude? I'll admit it does have a certain appeal to me as well but performance wise it is lacking to the R1. Besides that, I think this year will be the last year for Rc-51 production... maybe?

Anyways, yea keep the bike and save your $$$ Throw a couple more mods on there and do some more trackdays. The 02/03 R1 is great but to go that much more in debt is not worth it.

Dude the pre '02 RCs sucked....their suspension sucked they turned heavy & basically every owner has sunk almost $3000 into them to make them competitive with a modern 600.
The 02s are a great series & I've owned one, they just dont feel fast, they have great balance in their handling as well.
They respond to mods excellently, but will never feel like the R1.
The torque on the 51 feels like it builds to a climax, while the R1 just bangs & you are going. The brakes on the 51 are the best production brakes I've ever felt, next to the 929/954...even better then the Brembos on a mille R!

Keep the R1 unless you can test ride a 51 to see if you really want it....do the test before you sell your 1.

BTW, I sold the RC to get an R1....I dont like twins as much as I4s.

"Marshall", I can't answer your poll because you don't have my response listed there. I would recommend keeping the 98" if you can afford to and purchase the 02-03' R1 as well. The 98-99' were the strongest of the three models. 00-01' were weaker and the 02' models are just plain butter with the best EFI on the market. :fact

Unless you are headed to the track, the RC-51 will be a step backward for street use. After all, it's a 750..........

a friend of mine about 3 months ago went through the same problem. he had a sweet 01 champ. r1, he traded it for a 02 rc51. well i'm not knocking the rc it is a preety sweet bike, but it lacks in power, performance, and in my opion handling. after we broke in the rc we all went to the local dragstrip. well after getting is ass handed to him by a good buddy on a cbr 600, need to say he was pissed!!! he went from running 10.37 on the r1, to running 11.02 on the rc. but each to ther own. i do think the rc is a nice bike but it is just not a r1.

 YALL KEEP IT RUBBER SIDE DOWN

New R-1

The reason I say this is because if riden all three and own a 02 R-1 and love it it turns better than the RC51 in corners due to it's lighter weight and it has more hp. In addition the Honda is very expensive to make HP increases as opposed to the Yamaha. As far as the diffrence between the 98 and 02 is lighter better fuel delevery system, better power to ground set up due to the swing arm being raised 7mm and lengthened while still maintaing the length of the wheelbase. The motor was raised 70mm and lifted so it sits more over the front tire. Also it has a much stiffer frame you don't have the flex that the 98 00 and 01 had. All and all the 02 is a huge improvment and it just is a better platform for the rider.:)

Just keep the 98 and save for a new bike. Two bikes could be much fun. And besides if one breaks you still have something to ride.

if you are even thinking about a RC51, GET THE SP2! The SP2 ("Service Pack 2"?) ;) is a lot more refined than it's predecessor. You can get a brand new one for a decent price.

Hell, you can get a new R1 for $8,800. I don't know what your budget is, but those are my suggestions.

Good luck!

I gave up my '00 R1 to get my '02.. it was really hard to do, but the dealer gave me such a good trade-in I couldn't resist.. I say maybe try and put your bike in the locals and see how much you can get out of it.. you may be able to get a really good price, which will make getting an all ne one worth it.. otherwise, just do as some of the others said and mod the shit out of your bike.. it is indeed a classic!

Well really anyone who buys a RC-51 for a drag bike is an idiot. I have friends in the Honda dealer out here and they said that you woulod be disappointed in the lack of power on the RC-51. I would like to have one...but not a chance in hell would I ever trade the G1k in for that. You should take the advice of the other members and keep your bike and mod it out....or get a new R1.

I really love the 98 - afterall it is a modern day classic. However, the new ONE's (02+) have a lot of great features that make it a hard choice (suspension and FI alone). That's why I voted on upgrading to a new R1. Just MHO.
