Anyone experiencing a " TICKING " at low revs????
i have an 05 R1 only 2.5k on the clock and by christ the engine ticks like fcuk!!!!
it gets louder as the engine heats up and when at normal operating temp the revs also hunt quite badly..... anyone experienced this ? how quiet is your engine? is it normal cos my last R1 a Y2K model started ticking and low and behold the fcuker let go on me as the cam chain tensioner failed!!!!!....
Its a real metal ticking sound, but im lost!!!

when was the last oil change?

my R1 does the same thing with 4k miles on it. so far, i've heard this is a pretty normal affair for the model. until i hear a definite malfunction, i'm gonna just keep riding it and doing the scheduled maintenance as prescribed.

going to try a slightly thicker oil 10w50 fully synthetic on monday to see if this helps
my manual for my 05' R1 says to use 20w-40. if the ticking is most apparent during the first few moments after starting the engine, why would 10-50 be a thicker choice. because i thought that the first number ,ie. 10w or 20w, designates thickness viscosity when cold. so shouldnt you try something like 30w-40 or similar????

ah your right and wrong at the same time..... the noise is most apparent when hot!!! not cold. so im increasing the upper temp viscosity properties!!!!

Seems to me that most tick and all have noisy engines.

Unfortunately though even the professionals call this tick normal until it becomes terminal. Then it turns out to be a valve problem or even worse a spun rod bearing.

Chances are its normal and never will get any worse BUT.........

Hmm, mine had a "tick" from about 3000 miles (it started immediately after an oil change, no, I didn't screw up the oil change). Around 9000 miles the dealer replaced the cam chain tensioner, 300 miles later it dropped a valve and the piston below exploded. Engine is toast. Repair bill so far is $6,700.

It don't think "ignore it" is a viable option.

I'm seeing more and more of these stories on the board. It's sounding to me like there's a serious flaw in the 04 motor somewhere.

OUCH:confused:

How much is a new engine?

I have a 99 with 51,000 miles. Everyone says that the ticking is normal... but in my book normal doesn't necessarily mean OK.

I went with 20w 50 on my last oil change and it didn't help. The only consistent advice that i have gotten is to check the cam chain tentioner...who knows...

funny you guy's mention the tensioner cos i have since found out that the 04/05 engine does sometimes suffer from that failed component....
im not going to rest until its sorted...it may be nothing BUT i dont expect a ticky rattly sounding engine at 2400miles on anything... well other than a Ducati.
i will keep you posted on any findings with my engine.......

Perhaps it's an exhaust leak? Try tightening your header nuts. I can't tell you how many times I thought I lost a valve and it turned out to be an exhaust leak.

im gonna check this also...thanks for that.

I had the same problem after i changed the oil at 600 miles, I use the yama 20-40 so it is provably the oil, and the engine do a noise for a couple of seconds when a cool start, I also notice that when i kick the shift down to 1rs the clack is stronger ( it worries me).

your 2000 was a lemon too?

Wow, I should read the forums on this website more than just once a year. Frosty I had the same thing happen on my very babied 2000 R1. I was doing about 70 when I heard a sound almost like something hit my lower fairing, I pulled in the clutch, revved it, sounded fine....ah maybe not. I discovered the joys of a freshly blown motor when I got off my exit. The Yamaha dealer(whom shall remain nameless in New Haven, CT) took over 100 days to rebuild the motor with all new pieces....except for the oil pump which had been the cause of everything. Well, it did it again EIGHT MILES from the finish of my SECOND break-in. Ahh this story has so many interesting parts to it, like when the Yamaha East coast rep. asked me, what would make me happy, And I yelled back at him "HOW ABOUT A ***KING FACTORY KITTED MOTOR. I got a new 2002 R1 from Yamaha but they reached up inside, put a new chain to the oil pump and a new oil pump and tried to give the 00 back to me. NOPE, it was leaking oil and smoking. So they turned around and put it on their showroom floor and sold it to some unsuspecting sucker. Weasels. So if someone or possibly even someone's mother is driving around CT on a 2000 R1 with vin #JYARN05E4YA003966 there is a really interesting story behind it.

I would bet money I have the world's loudest ticking R1. Started at 300 miles and got louder up to 2000mi.

It runs fine & I have an extended warranty until 2009 so I'm not messing with it.
free extended warranty? cos of the ticking or you paid for the extended warranty??
