if you got an r1 i highly recomend that you don't do wheelies in first gear, it's pretty dangerous. too much torque.

second gear wheelies are the best. get going in second until you feel the rear end start to load up then clutch the bitch. once it comes up, if you clutch it right it will come up, give it gas and you will be able to ride it to at least 80 or 90 mph. if you find the right balance point you can take it up to 100 mph.

on the new 02 r1 it's a little tricky because at a certain rpm the exup valve will open up and jerk your bike a little higher. it kind of takes you by surprise.
the trick is to have very good throttle control because when your are on one wheel even the smallest throttle movement will make the bike respond.

thats my 2 cents on the matter:butt

Nawwwww I ride them out of first all the time...soon as she comes up click second...that way your not doing 75 mph when the front comes off... I do agree my 02 does have lots more torque in the 5500 rpm range.... click on the link below... 2 videos of me riding them out of first.. one is a standup where I change gears from 1st to 2nd.

that's good shit scotty...i don't know about your older r1 but on the 02's when i roll at about 40 i can clutch it up in second no problem. doing 75 you can use third to clutch it up.
my friend can bounce the front shocks and bring it up in 3rd doing about 80 on the freeway.

shifting from first to second while doing a wheelie is pretty bad on the gear box. scotty, with your skills you should clutch it up in second, ride it out and then shift to third. your wheelies will look beautiful, not that it's ugly now though.
again itz only my 2 cents again...:boobies

no balancing point

I HAVE OWNED A COUPLE OF BIKES LIKE: ZX9,CBR900,HAYABUSA AND NOW AN R1.THE BIKES I'VE HAD I COULD DO 2ND GEAR WHEELIES FOR EVER AND NOW THE 2001 R1 NOT LONG ENOUGH. WHATS THE PROBLEM? I BRING IT UP AT ABOUT 6,500RPM AND GO.COULD IT BE THE GEARING FOR THE R1? OF WHICH I THINK IS STOCK ANY HINTS?

Wheelies Forever

I've seen some vids where the guy looks like he has managed to find the sweetspot between throttle control and wind resistance. Personally I've never done a wheelie on a motorcycle on that but i have found sweetspots on a real bycicle. Theoretically a person could ride the wheelie forever right? bascially.
