If I'm riding on a level highway in 2nd gear, at what r.p.m. and or speed will the front end lift up when I let off and crack it? Or would I be better learning to feather the clutch?
Look, I know people are going to say don't even try it, if you haven't done it already. I can ride first gear wheelies to red line, and I've only successfully shifted into 2nd gear maybe a dozen times, and I hit 3rd once in my life. I'm going to learn how to pop it up in 2nd one way or another, I would just like a reference point of where to begin trying in the r.p.m. range. Thanks for any instruction, or advice.

what kind of bike? what mod? what elevation?

there are a lot of variables. if you can wheelie good enough to shift from first to second & even on to third while in the air I think you shouldn't have too much trouble guessing how to get it up in second.

It's a stock 2006, no mods, and I live in the mountains of SW Pennsylvania. Sorry, I should have included that info.
I have the same bike no performance mods (same setup as you).. 9-12grand, its really not about your rpm's but rather your clutch.. start around 8 or 9 and get the front tire a little off the ground then work your way up.. if you are trying to ride them out you'll want to get it the balance point faster by releasing the clutch quicker w/ more rpm's

ride safe. cover the rear break:riding

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it a try. I just hate only being able to pop a wheelie whenever I'm in first gear! I don't need to ride 3 miles on one wheel, but it would be nice to pop it up cruising down the highway. Thanks again!

If i clutched my 02 R1 at 9-12 grand id be on my ass in no time at all.Is the 02 compared to the 06 that much different to clutch up.I usually clutch mine up at around 6000rpm in second gear, comes up nice and controlled.Just get scared when it gets too high so i dont hold em for long just enough to look good.

Yea it is different, the 06's have a higher torque curve therefore making it harder to clutch them.

Dan im just across the bridge bro, we ride the stadium parking lot on friday nights and stunt for a few hours.. hit me up

I'm learning the same way. At about 70mph, I'm pop the clutch in 2nd and she comes right up. I'm just tring to get to the balance point right now cause I still havent tried to change gears in the air..

I'm -1 in the front so how does that affect clutching in 2nd gear? I can pretty much powerup a wheelie in 1st and 2nd but its alot easier I hear to clutch it.

p.s. Good info thread

I believe it would make it easier for you clutch up (i always mix up gearing backwards so i'm not sure haha).. in my opinion its all clutch, give yourself plenty of rpm's and work on your clutch control getting the front wheel slightly off the ground and going up from there

i would recommend clutching, as its more controllable. you wont have those occasional rear tire wobbles which can happen when powering it up. clutching is just safer. in first i clutch it at 10 mph when im in a parking lot just messing around, but second i usually go 45 mph on stock gearing, and clutch it up. i dont have any set rpm, just get on the gas, and pop the clutch, go a little at a time, start slower, popping the clutch, then get going a little faster, and do the same, until your able to get to balance point. 45-50 mph start works good for me.
hope this helps

Dont back off the throttle either when you clutch it just keep rolling it on.Ive had some mates do this and i remember when i first started out id roll off the throttle just out of habit and fear of flipping it and lack of technique, now i just give the clutch a little pull as im rolling it on and hey presto up she comes.
