if he was old enough of say 19 and could ride like an average rider.
for street use bearing in mind you know he will open her up some times as we all do. my dad had scramble dirt bike, my bro had a street bike some 250 suzuki 20 year ago and in that day it was considered fast and now i have a bike. it would be very hypercritical to say no you should not get one but these days i seem to hear more bike deaths then before. imo i personaly would NOT be happy, no parent should outlive there kid.

My wife & I encourage motorcycle riding in our family. Our 4 year old already is riding a PW50 & wants to start stunting on it. I had a streetbike as soon as I turned 15 & I fully expect my kids to do the same. The big difference is that they WILL take the MSF course & I will supervise their riding skills. No problems here.

Just remember, old age and wisdom will overcome youth and exuberance every time. This is something my father has told me. Chances are, if your father has concerns, they are probably justified. From your post, I would assume that you are an inexperienced rider (just my guess). In which case, your folks have every right to be concerned. Let's just hope you don't prove them right.

Keep it safe bro.
;)

Yeah... my dad wouldn't let me own anything but dirt bikes and enduros. It pissed me off then, but I probably wouldn't be alive now if he had let me have one in some of my more reckless days... It didn't really stop me from riding bikes, because I've always lived with guys that have had street bikes available for me to ride, but I was always more cautious with other guys stuff.

Since my son is 5 and daughter is 3....it would be a long time before I would have to make such a decision....so I dont know...on one hand...I see myself at 10-12 y/o and missing out on a lot of fun because I was never allowed to have anything motorized....but I did race BMX for a long time....

And on the other hand I see how people drive....and would wonder if I wasnt such a m/c fanatic...if even I would ride... last year I got hit by ignorant cagers almost EVERY day coming home from work....

well actually i am the proud owner of the 1 i have been riding from the age of 12. i try to ride with in my limits but on the odd occasion i have rode too fast for the street which is a problem i need to fix but i have recently been touched with light from a post by kneedown called "THE PACE" i will try to adopt this riding style from now one as it is far safer.i digress the question is not about me, its a general question for you/me/us

Another question is: Would you let your daughter ride on the back of some kid's bike? I see how some of these younger guys ride with passengers and I would be very afraid to let my daughter.
I would most definitely NOT! I don't have a daughter tho, so I won't ever have to worry about that. Now, if my sons give rides to girls when they are older, they had better respect the wishes of the passenger or I will sell their bikes right in front of them!!!!

well, that is an interesting question...i'm 20, i've got a bike...and believe it or not..i pay for it.....i think this is a good idea......about 19-20 till' the first road bike, man i know it seems like a long time, but i swear, i dunno if i'd be alright if i had one whenever i was 16, but then again, if i had started out riding like a dr125 on the street whenever i was fourteen or something, maybe that would be a different story..?????? however, later in life..if i ever decide to have kids, they will definitely have off road toys-a-plenty

I have a daughter that will learn to ride when she turns 7 or so. That's two years away. She will definately learn how to ride properly and safely so she can recognize when it would be safe/not safe to be a passenger. Hell, I plan on buying her an 80, then maybe a 125 (dirt) and when she is old enough I may even spring for a bandit or something.

I encourage it.

My boys 12 and 13 are already begging me to ride the R1 or atleast their mom's R6. My daughter 11, swears she will be the best female stunter in history. I cannot wait for the day that all five of us street ride together. Some our kid's favorite vacations inlvove family off-road riding!

If I had kids I would love for them to take up the sport of riding. However, I only started riding when I was 29 (now 32). Chances are that if i started at the age of 19 or 20, I probably wouldn't be here today. I'm not saying that all 19 or 20 year olds are reckless or anything like that. I'm only saying that I was and by not having a bike allowed me to enjoy other sports such as hockey and skiing that I probably wouldn't have been able to afford.

Mind you, if I had started to ride earlier I would probably be a lot better!!:2bitchsla

Just my $.02;)

My parents let me get an R6, though I only ride it on the track, so no worries about traffic. I haven't ever felt the need for more power, and I think I would probably kill myself on an R1. The R6 goes pretty damn fast, and is great when it comes to cornering. No R1 for me...ever. On the street, I have had a passenger a few times, and I always take it really easy when someone is on the back. I don't want to be responsible for someone else getting hurt. Of course, I'm more sane than most people my age (17), so I'm probably not a good example :p

I personally couldn't resist the urge to splatter my brains across the room if such a thing as death should happen to any son of mine on an R1, that is provided I had no wife to lean on. I will encourage my kids to play sports and pray they never get addicted to our oh so dangerous hobby.

It's kinda mixed for me. My oldest boy shouldn't even be driving a car, let alone anything on 2 wheels. The youngest one, daughter 17 next week, is a speed demon, it's a toss up on her, the youngest boy, no problem with getting an R1 if he so chose to ride one.

been ridin since i was 5, now iam 30, been on the streets for 15 years, 3 nights ago was my first accident...i count myself lucky, i do ride fast, i ride hard, i even do some stunting, i used to road race everything from 50cc YSR's to TZR 250's. I have done some stupid shit, I shouldnt be here, call it luck, call it good riding..dont care, 16-21 you should not have an R1, not even a 750 you dont have the skills, you dont have the reaction, you dont have the mind set for it. why would you want an R1 at that age?...cause all the kewl kids have them.....????? know your limits

my old man is 70 and this is what he told me

"To be old and wise, you first must be young and stupid"

but you have to live through it

I wouldn't want my daughter to ride on the back of a sportbike. I personally wouldn't even ride on the back, only because I don't feel safe at all unless i'm in control. I've taken girls my age before (19) for rides but I barely go above the speed limit when they're on and I'm exta extra cautious. But unfortunatly not everyone is like that :no. Its quite a responsibility to have someone on the back, and i just remind myself each time how horrible I would feel if they ever got hurt.

Not for road use ......Too many idiots out there.
They will, however, do what they want when they are old enough.
That said, I'd support them on the track or field.

if i had a fast street bike when i was in my teens i would be dead. no querstion. my 4 year old has a pw50, but i would consider selling the one in a few years to pay for a few mx bikes. i couldnt look in a mirror or my wifes eyes again if he got killed on the street.
