Mechanical masterpiece??MMMM?

As others have said and as you have put so well, it is an excellent observation to make. An R6, as an example, is probably more than enough of a bike for me.

I will never use the R1 to its potential - I won't ever take it to the track. I might do a couple of drags just to piss off the boy racers but for most days i'll just cruise to work or go sight seeing in our fantastic country.

There aren't any rules which say you can only get a fast bike if you intended to ride it fast. (In fact there are lots of rules which say no matter how fast you are capable of going - you got to stick to the limit. My first 32hp Mini could do the limit!!!)

There are ALOT of expensive and fast cars around the city where I work and I drive faster than all of them in my Celica. People don't buy powerful machines just purely for the go. The R1 is a mechanical masterpiece to be appreciated in many more ways than just grunt.

If I wanted just grunt I would probably get a mates dad to build me a 750 two stroke Kwaka and put it in a modern ZX7R frame.

There are other reasons for going straight to the R1. Bikes in here seem to depreciate at about 35% a year.

Meaning the brand new R1 selling today for $25000.00 goes for $18000.00 the next year and $10000.00 the year after that. The R6 is even worse. I hate losing money of shit. If i brought the R6 i would be left with a bike that was worth next to nothing in two years and having to start all over again saving for the bike i wanted in the first place.

I'm not made of money. Computer geeks don't get paid what they use to.

The other thing is that i have never been able to buy the next best thing. Whenever i make a purchase i have to have the best. what would be the point otherwise?

Why get a WRX when you can get an STI?
Why get a 19inch monitor when a 21inch is just a little bit more?
Ive got a 400watt PC speaker system which was the best i could find in the country just to play games...

Oops - now I sound like an asshole.

I just know that if I don't get the bike i wanted in the first place i would always regret it.
I aint sure baout the mechanical masterpiece bit, the bloody tickin is what creates the doubts there, but i am certain that you were sounding like an asshole!:lol

Hi guys - love this site... this is my first post.

My question is this:

I have been riding now for about a year and have been riding a ZXR400R (Http://www.empyrosis.com/bikepics/index.html). Its a nice bike and i like it but think its time to move onto something with a bit more power down low.

Was wondering if the 2000 R1 that I want is the bike for me in terms of whether or not I could handle making a 600cc jump in capacity.

I'm not a crazy rider. I don't stress my 400, dodge between cars or travel regulary above the speed limit. I just really like the look and feel of the R1 above anything else.... well apart from an F4 but thats almost twice the price of an R1 and thats just crazy talk.

Do I need to spend more time in the lower capacities or should I be okay with a little care?
Self control !! Ride safe

Don't forget. A motorcycle is only as fast and scary as YOU allow it to be. Ride in your ability and be tender with your imputs and you won't have a problem. That said...If you have a tendency to panic throttle....You'll die.

Okay guys - Just thought you guys might have a few pearls of wisdom you wished to impart.

As an example - i'm sure there are differences between riding a sportsbike and a Harley. I don't think I would be comfortable jumping straight on a Harley without taking a few pointers first.

But if an R1 is just a better version of a sports or hyper sports bike with more power then i think i should be fine.

I own both a HD and a 2k2 R1. I'm here to tell you that a HD is much easier to ride. It has much less power and is much more docile than the R1. This is not to try to scare you, but to give you a point of reference. :) Throttle control is everything on the R1. A full twist of throttle on the HD might get your ears flappin', but on the R1, in the lower gears, it'll get you head scrapping the ground.:D Harleys are big fuzzy puppies in the comparison.:)

a full twist on 6th while at 70mph on the r1, can yank you off the seat. it felt like your arms were being pulled out of their sockets.

this happened to me about a few miles after I got my bike off the dealer's lot. ...and then the meaning of the word 'respect' suddenly occurs to you.

I got an R1 2001 2 months ago. I've had a full bike license for 4 years, though I didn't have much super sport experience. When I first got mine, I rode it slow and easy for a month, no matter how great the urges were to twist the stick. Basically, I wanted to get use to my baby really well before going all out!

I'm very comfortable with her now, and all that because I wanted to take my wife for rides and would kill myself if anything happened to her. We're really happy now and I thank GOD I have my R1.... I sudgest you do the same!

it felt like your arms were being pulled out of their sockets.

20 sets of push ups.......say 5x a week to start.
Pull ups.....every day cept Sunday.

:beer ...plenty of fluids

try and stay away from :boobies ....when your in training.

well this is what i think.......no one is ever good enough for the one just remember the r1 owns your a$$ and just slow down enough for the corners.........steady hand and you won't slip......and don't do no dumb stuff like tachin 10 at full lean.......but i usually dump full throttle 1st and second but by that point u are gettin up to track speed and most streets are not fit for that kinda stufff so...............don't think your haden or some shit ..............kapeeesh...............just have some respect for yourself and the one and u should be fine

Dont listen to all the wise guys... I got my R1 without a license to drive it, I have been on it every day sence... and that was 2 years ago. My opinion is if you can ride a regular bicycle you will do fine on an R1. Its all in your head, even though the bike is made to go fast its not like you have to do so. After testing other bikes I find it hard to even think of riding some thing else than an R1. No other bike beats the feel of prefection, so sell your 400cc and take the step to heaven, even if you dont do mile long wheelies and drag your knee in every turn, I onestly beleve you will make faster progress in your riding abilities on a "real bike". So if you have the money to spend, get as real as possible with improvments, modifications and everything. :)
At first I got my R1 because the ducati sales guy did not want to sell me the fatest duke he had (he wanted to sell me a 600 monster instead), because I had only been riding 125cc offroads and had no license... so I went to the yamaha dealer he did not have any problems, I signed papers and then he told me some words of advise " first gear is down and the rest is up, and be carefull with the clutch"... It was exelent I was racing around all night that day, and my face is still locked in a smile.

dont beleve the hype

when you can pay the Insurance on the thing your good enough to ride the thing, your also good enough to wash it, store it, crash it, video porn on it, die on it, spend you life in a wheel chair because of it. Just don't be an idiot, and you'll be OK. Don't go writing cheques that your skills can't cash. Don't try and make a ghost rider video.

Remember sometimes your the Pigeon and sometimes your the statue. That's right kids, some times your get to shit on and some times you get shit on.

Respect the R1. It will be the first and maybe the last thing to tell you when it doesnt like the way you have done something. And just Enjoy it, once you have one you wont look at anything else the same *grin *~ I wouldnt settle for anything less, would you?.~

R1 all the way

Four simple words for you. R1 ALL THE WAY!!! Had my license for 4 years but never ride or had a bike. Been dirt bike a few times thats it. Wanted the R6 for first bike but friend talked me into getting R1. At first I was scared but now I realized its the best choice I've ever made. Had the R1 for 4 months and loving it! Great bike to learn on but know your limits. When I ride my friends CBR 600 its thumps down. The power on R1 is just too sweet.

Riding a bike is like taking a shit. When you gotta go you gotta go. No matter how hard you try to hold it in, you cant stop it. Dont fear death accept it, its already been written.

I just bought my R1 a week ago, and I never touched a motorcycle in my life. My first impression was how much power was available to me with such little twist. I managed to do fine on it, and within hours, I was riding on the streets with comfort. (I dont think Im ready for the highway though :( ) All I can say is be careful on the throttle, and resist the urge to show off to your friends :D Just take it easy and enjoy it, at least thats what Im doing :hellobye

First bike?............How much showing off can you do with a week in the saddle?

You better get some riding time in before you go showing off too much of your....."look at me perched on a bike....... tallent.

just kidding.......well.....................no Im not.:no
