Compared to what we used to race back in the mid 90's, the OEM stuff today is way better than the full kit stuff back then. I honestly see no reason to upgrade the calipers on the current model to 07 R1. They're fantastic. The pads, rotors, lines and maybe the MC could use an upgrade for a track day hero.
agreed !!!
to the OP --- my 2 cents .. there will be a benefit but the real question is the benefit worth the expense and the answer on that depends on 4 things 1) the bike you are riding
2) street or track applications
3) your riding ability
4) how much money you have to spend
answers -
1) are you top dog or just above the average joe. Most of us are the average Joe. I can tell you back in the day I used to ride VERY HARD .. and I actually turned my stock rotors blue due to high speed late braking on the street .. we are talking 130 - 150 mph range down to 80 mph for turns (alot of farm area around my way back in the day). On my 99R1 -stock set up was fine. This MAY not work on the track. ON my old ZX7 back in the day - in endurance races - I would experience brake fade - was fine for sprints..
2) on the street ( assuming the stock set up is good ) OEM is fine. On the track - its up to your ability. Still there is a BENEFIT - which was the original question.
3) if you are top dog and unlimited wallet -I would buy whatever you can afford. If you are not using it now - you will find a way to use it. I found that with better braking components - its' a nice mental piece of mind to have extra barking power with less physical energy exerted.
Like karate lessons -- you don't take them to kick a$$ - but not to get your a$$ kicked. Consider braking the same if you have the ability to use them.
4) if money is an issue - get stainless lines / good pads / and upgrade your master cylinder. For 99% of most applications - that will be sufficient. Regardless, I would start here before buying calipers and rotors. As Meister said - the stock stuff is pretty good.
My setup works with the OEM 99 setup -there is even better stuff now - and this works pretty good for me.
