The 848 evo has: more power, cheaper to maintain, better ergonomics.

The R1: much less power, expensive to maintain, crap ergonomics, all about status.

The choice is clear... KTM.

I have a '07 r1 and my brother has a '11 848. The r1 is more comfortable, faster, but the the 848 looks awesome.

If you're not concerned about riding position, or performance, etc. and simply want a sweeter looking bike, I would get the 848. Otherwise, stick with the r1.

one of my riding buddies has the 848 and he loves it, but hes like 5 foot 4, 150 pounds. and he always says a guy his size has no use for a liter bike. he loves the bike, and hes also an engineer so the money isnt a problem. but in my opinion, i eat that sh!t up all day on my 05, and my bike is was more comfortable!

and you guys talkin about the ktm, i could get my hand on one for a real good price right now, but i dont know if i want to get rid of my 1 yet, any one who has both, or has ridden both , have any input?

I have both in my garage right now. The 848 is my brothers.

848
Very slim, nimble, lighter, lots of low end torque, a bit top heavy so it wants to lay into turns, rearsets are angle more aggressively and sits a bit higher, the motor sounds like a monster, less comfortable riding position, looks flawless, mods are freaking expensive

r1
wider, not as nimble, slightly heavier, power comes in around 5k and pulls to redline, well balance weight top to bottom, rearsets at a more comfortable position, more comfortable riding position, 2 best looking bike out there (1st would be the ducs), higher top end speed, more fun to ride, I like the r1 more around the corners, fairly priced mods

Good point.

I had a YZF1000 and then two R1's and then my buddy got a 916. While my Yamaha's were rock solid and much more capable than I was, I totally lusted after the Ducati. Bought a 998 after my R1 was stolen and went to the dealer to take delivery (he'd converted it to a mono tail and installed Termignoni Ti pipes). It was beyond stunning. The owner of the dealership wheeled it out front, handed me the keys, and I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I rolled away on 101 in Oceanside and, with every stop at a red light, began to question my fawkin sanity. It was a torture rack that was roasting my thighs. I rode it 5 miles home and parked it, wondering WTF I had just done. Rode the bike regularly out to Palomar Mtn. on the weekends and after awhile, got used to the ergonomics. The good part is that I still lusted after the bike and would frequently go out to the garage and sit on it, stare at it, start it every once in awhile.

Buy the bike that you lust after and the rest is just details that you'll find a way to work out. The 848 is a great bike on the track and not so much fun in the city. If you commute and spend a lot of time in city traffic, there are better bikes to ride. If you're in moto-lust over the 848, buy it.
Did you convert your R to a Xerox? or did you buy another R other then the all red? Sorry for my ignorance.:lol

I stripped off all the OEM bodywork, bought a set of Sharkskinz and two pieces from Attack (Sharkskinz didn't make the pieces that go under the tank/seat), took the whole mess to a friend that runs a body shop and had him paint and apply a sticker kit.

What started out as an effort to preserve the OEM bodywork from a track crash turned into me getting a set of bodywork that I'd REALLY hate to crash in. Total fail, but I like the look.
