...because many times this hissue has been posted and many replies stated holding in the clutch somewhat helps and it does from my experience. I dont know why but it starts the first time everytime when I do what I said any other time I try starting not doing it takes 2 or 3 attempts. If you do a search on this topic you will seee posted what I said many times just trying to help but of course some body has to be flame happy

Holding in the clutch decouples the transmission from the turnover, resulting in less load on the starter motor and most likely allows the engine to spin-over a little faster. As you say, it's not a cure, but I'm sure it helps.

The clutch thing works. I was pissed when I spent a bunch of money, and the bike was harder to start than my old CBR. I tried pulling in the clutch while starting, and it starts up on the first try. I don't even wait for the fuel pump to shut off.:yesnod

I always wait for the pressure to build up before I crank it, but I've never had it fail to start on the first try. It is completely stock though. I have always been very impressed with how well the bike started. When I bought the bike I was still living in ND and I could go out to the garage and start it no problem when the temp was hanging around zero. Might just be me, but that seemed pretty impressive.

On octane... i have never introduced my bike to anything under 93 octane... occasionally when i find a gas stop with 94 i fill it up 94 other than that always 93 NO LESS. On the other hand Today i went out and i hadnt started the bike in 2 days.. i turned the key on and waited for the pump to shut off but then i waited an additional @ 8 seconds and on 2-3 turns of the engine she started right up... i was impressed.. i iwll have to try it again tommorow the same way just to be sure..

I tried to start mine today while holding in the clutch and it still didn't start on the first try. No biggie, once I get some bolt ons installed with a PC3r then I can richen up the mix a bit.

Thanks geo99!

OK, that's one response:
Historically had problem with starting first try.....93~94 octane

Any more guy's? What octane do you run in your 02~03 R1 and have you had 'first try' starting problems or not?
