Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, and new to sport bike.

I am about to get the new R1 but I was wondering whether there is any difference between US version and EU version.

I was told that before 2014 R1 the US version has lower horse power due to more strict regulations, and EU has a micro-chip in their key (better security?). Does it still apply to 2015?


I also got another question I am only 5' 6" tall, and new R1 is really tall, is it good to lower my bike? Or I have to find a way to conquer it.

They are and I guess always will be regional differences between the same models of the bike. They are caused by different legislation applicable for a given country. The USA, and California in particular, has a very strict emission laws so the bikes sold in US come with a different mapping to comply with these regulations. Unfortunately that also means that there is a difference in the power output in comparison with EU or Australian models. The difference is not really that dramatic but seems to cause a lot of hyperventilation :D
The EU and Australian versions also have an engine Immobiliser - the ignition keys are coded electronically to the ECU. The sensor reads it from the EPROM chip in the key and matches with the internal code every time you start the engine. So even if someone copies the key it will not be able to start your bike.

The Canadian version also comes with the immobilizer with Red and Black keys...I'm surprised the US version and the Canadian version differ...I thought they were suppose to be the same...maybe in Canada we don't have the restrictions that the US bikes have and are more in line with the EU??

I was under the impression that the Canadian and U.S. (Non-cal version) only difference was the immobilizer.

Do not know so can not comment whether they are the same or not. You could be right as that would make sense though I've read somewhere on the forum here that the US ECU has different pin-outs so you can not load the EU maps on it, but I have not seen the diagrams to be able to confirm. Until Workshop Manuals are not available everything needs to be treated as a lot of guesses and opinions.
