Hey, yesterday I was riding my '03 R1 (33tkm on it) and was doing semi-fast acceleration and after changing from 4th to 5th or 5th to 6th gear I heard rattling sound what I say would come from chain rolling over the spikes of sprocket. Found youtube
about someone having same issue. What could it be? Possibly just the drive chain actually jumping on the front sprocket? The chain is stretched little over the spec provided in the manual and sprockets possibly have too wide gaps between spikes, but nothing too major. I have new chain and sprockets already, just haven't installed them yet. Thanks for replies in advance!

That chain sounds like it's loose and during shift changes or after hard exceleration the sound increases because there is not as much tension on the chain after exceleration. It may also not be aligned properly, you should use a micrometer when adjusting, you can not trust the lines that are used for alignment on the swingarm, they are for an estimated idea how close you are and can be inaccurate. Also be sure the chain is properly lubricated. Get that new chain and sprocket installed ASAP, I would never ride a bike with a chain that sounded like that!!!

Thanks for the reply. I always use micrometer when adjusting chain to maintain proper alignment. I also lubricated the chain before I went riding yesterday before that happened. Anyways, I'm going to swap the chain and sprockets before I go riding for the next time. Might as well swap that worn out rear tire too. Thanks again!

Hey, I'm continuing this thread since I believe this might have something to do with the original problem. So I changed my sprockets, chain and rear tire (aligned properly). I went for a short ride yesterday and the bike felt someway odd or something didn't feel quite right, but I didn't pay too much attention to it and just thought it's the new tire and chain that needs to be get used to. Today checked chain slack again just to be sure it's in spec and went for another ride and I would say there is something wrong with the bike which felt more noticeable the more I drive. I can feel abnormal vibration which i'm 99% sure is coming from the engine as a result of revving. I can feel the vibration more on certain rpm (starts to be bad at 5k and pretty much horrible at 7k) and when I'm letting off the throttle a bit it's very apparent (I can feel it on my hands and feet from the foot pegs). I tried to go like 170 km/h on a straight road and there is a lot of vibration so it is pretty much impossible to drive that fast (I know I don't ever need to nor it's even legal, but bike should not vibrate that much even on those speeds). I'm very sure it doesn't come from the new tire I swapped being unbalanced because when pulling clutch in while in speed I cannot feel any abnormal vibrations. Also changing gears feels very "rough" especially from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th and also from 1st to 2nd is "rougher" than normal and almost feels like the pedal is "kicking" back sometimes (on the last gears) and sometimes doesn't go to gear even though not going to gear is very rare (this happens on the last gears also). When I got home from riding today I lifted the bike on stands, turned it on and with the rear tire off ground I pulled clutch in and kicked in first gear, seems like the rear wheel is jerking quite a bit that feels to me is more than normal (tried with second gear which seems to jerk even more). The wheel does stop after the jerk and turning about half a turn when the clutch remains pulled in. Very short time ago I adjusted the clutch cable to be nearly perfect so maybe something with the clutch itself or am I missing something now that could cause this? Any ideas?

Thanks for answer. That's what I'm afraid of. I was going through the internet for similiar problems and I found number of cases where bike was vibrating after chain/sprocket replacement. I just don't know what could cause it. Also, I have never tried chain while sitting on the bike, but now I did for some reason and it felt very tight. The slack is at 40mm while the recommended slack is 40mm to 50mm, but I am nearly 100kg so could it just go too tight when I apply my weight on the bike and therefore the vibration comes very apparent because of the chain? If I cannot solve this I'm just going to take the bike to some professional to take a look at it.

I would pop off the clutch cover and confirm that its good. If all parts are ok than its almost seems like you have a bad bearing on one of the transmission shafts, or gear issues, or both. While you have the clutch apart you could see if theres any endplay in the output shaft too...

Just wondering, what's the mileage on the bike and was the bike used when you purchased it? If so how many miles out of the total mileage did you put on it? When I had my 02 it had about 35,000 miles on it and although it didn't have the chain rattling you're experiencing 1st to 2nd gear shifts were kind of sticky. The 02-03 year R1's were know for that problem.
