Hey guys I’m very new here like one hour new. But I have a question don’t be mad if I am in the wrong part either I need help lol ? I have a noise comming from my sprocket??? I have a 02 r1 just brought it a few months ago. I did a new clutch An fork seals. Now I just did the chain today along with a new chain slider or ( yamaha 5pw 22151 00 00 seal guard ) mine was gone becuase the chain seamed to be sticking to the sprocket witch I know the chain was old, But I now noticed my sprocket was a little forward the teeth nothing too bad but I will do it before next year, I went with a 520 rk chain with a threaded master link ( you tightened to snap off the ends. ) now when I’m riding I hear a noise I’m not sure where it is comming from could it be the worn sprocket ? The chain seams to go side to side in one spot very very little tho I’m just puzzled An my ol lady has got to be tired of me dumping money in to my bikes guns all the time. Thanks for the help in advance

Hey guys I did NOT replace the sprockets. I didn’t think they were bad An I have never owned a crotch rocket just Harley’s I was not aware to change the sprockets with changing the chain. Like I stated the chain wiggles very slightly like Maby a 1/4 of an inch left to right. It’s just I can see it An like I stated it makes a noise. I was going to do the sprockets this winter I live in New England riding season is very short here.

If you put the bike up on a rear stand and run it in first gear can you better pinpoint the noise? That'll also allow you to see if chain straight on from the rear as it runs to triple check the alignment.
Ok thank you I am going to morrow to buy a new rear sprocket as well from a local shop the guy said it could be from the teeth pointing forwards a little bit it could be catching the chain ?

Not "catching" per se, but chains and sprockets are designed to wear in together. The patterns they create are somewhat unique. So a new chain on old sprockets that have worn a particular way could cause noise, but could also severely shorten the new chain's life due to irregular wear. I suggest replacing both sprockets as a pair as well.

Well guys I did end up getting new sprockets an another new chain 530 chain an sprocket kit. The noise stopped right away every thing is much better just costed more money Is all. I’m assuming the way the old rear sprocket was with the teeth forward a little bit is was causing the noise. Either way thanks for the help guys I’m a. Harley man this is my first crotch rocket so thanks for being easy on me.
