How would you guys rate the 01 R1 to the newer models (aside from the fuel injection) as far as performance reliability, and looks.

its still a great bike, what are you worried about?

Not worried, just curious what others thought. Thanks for your reply.:)
well the 04 is completley different bike, the previous gens are all much closer to each other as far as over all all feel and experience, very torquey, shorter gearing, very flickable. The 02-03s are fi and are said to handle better than the 01-98 but they all still handle sweet if you get em set up right. Get what your budget wants, they are all solid.

98 - 03 all very similar

04 - completely new bike

I've been reading a lot threads on this website and on others and it appears that the 04 R1's are having problems with engine stalls. I'm not sure about the 2002 and 2003 R1's, if they are encountering the same problems.

Bad Ecu, Tps, Throttle body, etc seems to be the culprit.

So if you have the carberated 1998-2001 R1's, hang on to it, because it will never stall on you, unless you do loops on your bike...:rock

the 2001 "last of the carberated R1's" have the fastest 0-100 km/hr acceleration compared to the newer fuel-injected R1's... :thumbup

I've owned a 2000, 2002 and now the 2004. All three are awesome machines! I don't think you could go wrong with any model R1.:thumbup

Miss my old 00 R1 everyday. They are still outstanding bikes. The thing I miss the most is being able to make it backfire at will.

I still love my 01 as much now as I did when I first purchased it. It has over 32,000 miles on it and is still as solid as a rock!!!!!!:rock

0-100 km/h doesn't exist on a bike. It's not the bike who does the time, it's the rider. On any bike (1999 and up) , including the 600's, if you go WOT (wide open ) in first gear you will loop. So it's the ability of the rider to play with the throttle and with the clutch that will give the 0-100 time, nothing else. And usually more power won't help at all, but will give you trouble and slower 0-100. Try to go to a moto drag event, and see how the 600's use to kill every 1000's on the start.

hope no one minds my bumping this thread as I'd like to read more feedback. I will soon be looking for a new bike and while I was initially set on an 02+ R1 I think the older models might fit my budget a bit better. I just don't want to regreat not having the FI and whatever other benefits the newer models offer. How durable are the engines on these bikes, as most of the models I'm looking at have higher mileage. Thanks

The older carb'd R1's have great fuel delivery, even stock, I wouldn't let the fact that they have carbs hold me back if it fit my budget better than an '02+

No problem.

There is a lot to say for all of them.

My old 00
Sexy as hell, handles great, and stops excellent. After a track day you will be tired though. I really have exactly 0 complaints about that bike. Great power down low. It really comes to life at 4000 rpms, and keeps getting better all the way to the top. Seems to just make power everywhere and that helps us non expert types go fast without trying. It is very touchy, it turns stops or accelerates for everything you do. Requires good throtle control. Excellent street bike and great on the track too.

The 04.
Hottest looking bike since the ducati 916. I consider the 02 954rr to be the bench mark in brakes and the new R1 stomps on it. Handling is extremely sharp feeling, and also requires care to be taken with the throttle. Power delivery is on the far side of insane. It has some nut down low but ot like before. Once you reach 9000 rpms, hang on. The trouble with this bike on the street is that it seems to have only two speeds,... barely going and freaking warp. It takes alot of time to get used to cause you must rev it up good to go fast, do not let it fall out of the power range. Once you get used to it though , I found it is far superior to anything I have ever ridden. It is just so different they should not have even namede it an R1. The sound from the pipes is great, but plan on spending money if you want aftermarket pipes. It seems to be more comfortable than the 00 UNLESS you carry a passenger then it is a torture rack.

Hope that helps man

Thanks for the input everyone. Are there any specific known problematic areas on the older bikes? Any recalls or weak mechanical parts that might need to be replaced?

THE TRANNYS SUCK ! Guaranteed to break. Other than that they are awesome and every bit as much fun or more than the 04-05 . I have a 2000 and an 05 Raven and I like the motor in the 2000 much more. The 05 is leaps and bounds faster(on the top end) but the 2000 has monster torque and will loft the front wheel without clutching it unlike the 05.

what's the tranny's typical liftespan? I don't want to buy a bike with 15k miles on it and then dump another thousand to rebuild the transmission. Thanks

it all depends on abuse, if it was heavily abused then you may want to be careful but other than that you shouldnt worry about it. mines over 30k and doin just fine :thumbup

I dont think I agree with that statement, sure there will be some that go down because of being beaten on, but in general the 98 - 03 R1 tranny is not a guarantee to break by a long shot.
