03 954 vs my 03 r1 ...not good.. turned better

HEy guys, last night I was hanging out at the local bike meeting place and a kid on an 03 954RR was there, I was interested to see what bike would pull. the highway was right there, so we got on it. both our bike only have slip-ons, nothing else. We started in second gear at 35 or so and accelerated all the way up to about 160 shifting through the gears. when we took off, my R1 pulled pretty strong, but as I went through third I heard his loud ass D&D go by me. I couldnt believe it. he consistently pulled from there on out. Now some may say its the rider, bnut this is definitely not the issue, both of us are very experienced riders. I was shifting just after my shift light and I am sure he was shifting about the same. Has anyone had this same experience, I just figured I would walk him fairly easily. Any reccomendations for round two. It just seems as though my bike had a lot more low end and fell flat compared to his bike top end. What cheap mods will get me more mid and top end without losing the low end. Thanks guys. I need revenge.

Well we went at it again and I have found that the R1 has WAYYY more low end power in all gears and the 954 has a little on the top. Also my weight, 50 lbs more than my buddy made a huge difference, we switched bikes and my R1 wasted him everywhere, it was my weight that was slowing me down when we raced at first. So I happy/relieved to know that my r1 qwasnt getting beat by a honda (even though honda is my second favorite). Thanks for the tips, I shifted differently and tucked too and that did seem to make a difference, I shifted when I felt the power flatten out.

TEchnique! Have you looked at YOUR own dyno graph and seen where the optimal RPM range to shift is? That makes a big difference. Don't just shift at redline, your not using your bikes full potential at all if you do.

Hope that might make a difference..

No, I do not have a pc3r, but I am looking into it, I didnt want to put the money into it if it was going to be an aggravation getting it tuned properly. Also by the time I buy one, install it, buy maps, and pay for dynotuning, I will be looking at 600 beans. Also, if I am going to go that much into it, I am going to buy a full exhaust system. Thanks though.

Beacuse stock vs. stock the honda will not keep up with the R1!:fact

I just ran mine this weekend stock and then with V stacks.

Blue is stock, Red is with the stacks and the green is with -1f +2R gearing. This one is set on speed not RPM as the bottom scale. With the stacks it peaked about 1200 RPM's earlier.

Maybe try switching bikes and see what happens. Jump on his 954 and lend him your R1 for one time and see if the results are the same.

GXRKLR: Just out of curiosity, why are you using four stacks instead of two?
Where two stacks help in the mid and a little on top, 4 were supposed to help with the low and mid range, possible loss on top. Which is where I want my power. My results didn't look much different than with two. It may make a bigger difference when I get the PCIII hooked up and adjusted.

HEy good call about being fat, I weigh 210 and the 954 ride must have only been around 150, never even crossed my mind. Good point. BUt that thing still pulls hard top end only over the R1, I expected it to pull everywhere if he were that much skinnier, but 50-60 lbs makes a huge difference.

50-60 pounds would definitely make a difference... He still shouldn't walk you though as the bikes are pretty even stock for stock... I "believe" the 954 takes better to mods though as I know 2 people dynoing at 154 rwhp (02 R1 & 954), and the R1 definitely has more $$ in mods....

Are both bikes geared stock?

yeah both bike are geared stock. I understand that the difference in weight would make a difference, but I think it should make it all teh way through, I assumed he would beat me down low too. I dont know. I will definitely switch up bike with him and give it a try. Also, anyone have tips for this fat shit to make his bike get up and go mid and top end, cause my low end power was great

I know the kid and he is being strait with me, the bikes are going to get raced again tonight, I am going to put try starting from a stop and also frm in 3rd gear roll on. I want to see how my low end prevails, then I am going to switch up bikes and give ti a try again. Ill let you know the results I still need to know what will give me mid range and top end power. I wanna waste him, like I should, R1 power

It is the weight. I weigh 210 and my buddy with a 954 weighs 145. Both bikes completely stock. One afternoon we were heading down the highway and decided to do some roll ons. I would stay even with him initially then he would walk away from me every time. I was bummed I expected the R1 to pull him. We switched bikes and I was even more bummed, He was kicking my ass with my bike! Right off the start he was gone and I couldn't catch him. Looks like I need to loose a few pounds :beer

you say you are shifting just after the shift light, how many revs is that?

on a close to stock 03 R1, after 10000 revs power seems to die off.. also him been alot light goes a long way to been faster..

I have a mod in my 03 that lets me pull all the way too 12000rpm with no loss of power and rev limiter kicks in at 12500..

210? Damn, I hitting the scales at 240, 6'3".... My 04 R1 feels like a slug. I can't imagine being 170 lbs and riding.. New Found Power!

I still can't believe he blew by you that bad or at all. I am no mech and don't claim to know that much, but someone, correct me if I am wrong. If you get a full system, won't you lose some low end? I hear the Velocity Stacks will give you some where around 5hp in the mid and a few at the top end. I know the PCIIIr will help out quite a bit and if you are going to do that maybe think about thrown in throttle slide stop kit, maybe going -1 in the front, and if you have money to blow get a new air box. Like I said before, " I don't claim to be a awesome mech " but that bike should not be pulling away from you.
