04 R1 fluctuating idle (surging)

So, when the bike warms up it fluctuates at idle. Seems to run great otherwise. Never dies, overheats or anything like that. Only mods I know of are gytr slip ons. I had the tps replaced in January and never noticed it before that, but didn't ride it all that much before I had it replaced. Anybody have any ideas?

Again, runs great, I got 40.8 mpg on my last tank.

Thanks in advance!

Power commander. Had the same problem with my 05 until I put the PC on and new map

In a lot of cases, it's just a function of a more free flowing exhaust. You can install a power commander, but it may still do it.

My 2005 R1 "lobes" at idle like I'm running a high lift cam in a small block V8 :)

You can kinda hear it a little bit in this video (skip ahead to 7:30 where I fire up the bike):

If the bike runs strong and you are not having any other issues, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you have a power command, you may be able to go into the map and trim out the idle area of the map a bit (I did this and it kinda helped a little, but it's hard to say how much). Just bump up the gas a little in the lowest couple of RPM areas and it may smooth things out a little bit.

Like I say, it wouldn't worry too much about it. It's probably largely due to installing the slip-ons.

The only other thing I can think of might be to get a Uni-sync gauge and check the air-flow between the throttle bodies. You might be able to sync them up a little bit, but I'm not 100% sure, as I haven't attempted that on my bike (so I can't really speak to how to do it for certain, nor if it would have any impact). I can say on car motors, that can smooth out the idle in some cases and also help the off idle smoothness, etc.

subscribing, I've got the same thing happening.... once it's warmed up the idle lobes by a couple hundred rpm. More like a bouncing lopy idle than a surging one. It started after two bros slip ons, exup delete and air filter. I do have a PCV so i've been trying a bunch of maps, but so far no luck.

I think it's mainly a function of modifying the intake and exhaust. Next time I ride, I'll keep a closer eye on the tach and see if I can get a feel for how many RPM's it covers when it's bouncing around at idle.

You can play around with maps all day, but I don't know if you can really get it to idle like a Honda Civic again, once you start adding lower restriction exhausts and pulling off the EXUP valve, etc, etc.

I got this sorted today by adjusting the map on the PCV.. added fuel from 1000-1500 rpms at 0, 2, and 5 percent throttle. Obviously at 5% you're not idling anymore but adding a little here helped with the smoothness.. Idles smooth as butter never varying more than 50-60rpms'.

I'm gonna play with it a little more tomorrow to try to sort the slight breaking up at 4500-5500. I'll update afterwards..

% throttle 0 2 5

RPM Values
1000 14 14 16
1250 13 17 12
1500 13 13 15
1750 5 11
2000 2 13

Everything else I left as is in my base map, but Ill be tweaking a little here and there to try to work out the stuff I talked about earlier

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but mine does it as well. Its pretty much fully modded.

It has a custom tune on it, but it lobes at idle (warming up or hot).

I'm thinking about raising the idle a tad bit to see if it fixes the issue. I've never changed values on a map before.

Other than that it runs like a beast and stays pretty cool for HOT Florida temperatures (rarely goes above 214 at stop lights).
