04 R1...What I think if you care...

I went to the Chicago motorcycle show tonight with my girlfriend.. Unlike some others on this forum that didn’t find the 04 R1 daunting I have to say it really awed me.. I like how much smaller they made the total package. I race an Aprilia RS 250 so to be fair I have to say I am biased towards smaller is better. The engineering of the motorcycle has really been thought out. Honestly it makes the 02 I owned seem huge... I do think that some larger riders may dislike the new design. The seat is much smaller then the previous R1 and the riding position seems more compact. The foot pegs are higher and the seating much lower. This has not been brought up since MCN’s initial rumor article claiming Yamaha took many design hints from MV for the 04 R1 and to be honest it does feel exactly like sitting on a MV Agusta F4.. I think many mags will bring this up in thier reviews..My girlfriend that is 5’7 could stand flat footed while sitting on the bike. The windscreen is much smaller then my 02.. I felt the 04 R1 even made the R6 seem a little bulky for a 600 machine. The fit and finish of the 04 is the usual Yamaha treatment…Impeccable. My girlfriend did not like the look of the heat shields on the rear exhaust canisters. I have to agree with her. I would have thought they could have done a better job on the exhaust. This is nothing a nice aftermarket slip-on couldn’t fix.. All three colors were at the show. I liked the blue the best and my second choice would be silver. The lava red is a maroon red and has been borrowed form the V-star model. To me this color belongs on a cruiser not a flag ship supersport machine. Yamaha should have made the red brighter and more florescent. The two toned silver looks really cool in my opinion but I sticking with the blue.. As far as the other manufactures I find the ZX10 second and the Honda third. I just don’t like the ergonomics of the Honda 1000RR. The ZX10 exhaust is horrible and seems like an after thought but the bike overall is sweet. All three make the GXR1K seem dated. As for performance I waiting for the mag BS like everyone eles.. Here is a picture of my 5'11 fugly on the 04 R1.... :hellobye

I'm starting to wonder about the Red color. On Yammi's site it looks like the shiznit, but I keep hearing peeps thoughts that it's "not as hot as they were thinking".......I'm hoping that I dont feel that way when it gets here, cause thats what I dropped a deposit on.

Thanks for the input Tony.. nice to have yet another perspective to drool over!
I am a Silver fan also.. and cant wait for mine to get here sometime in the near future!
Waiting on Exhaust myself too/.. Dont know which one will really "rip" this time around.. Had an Akrapovic Slip on Carbon on the 02, but it really wasnt loud enough I dont think! Cant wait to hear the new ones!
Take care and thanks again!

I'm starting to think that I should have bought an 03'. I'm a pretty big guy 6'3" 300#'s. If what your saying is true I'm going to be way cramped on an 04'. I dislike the 954rr because its so small. Since it's presold I have to get it but I can always sell it with 0 miles. Thats the only drawback of buying something sight un seen or in this case sat on. Chris

I disagree with some of that review. To me, the bike didn't feel any smaller (or bigger) than my 02 and certainly not as small as the R6. The 04 seat height is actually 1/2 inch higher than the 02. The most noticeable difference was the tank shape and cosmetics.
I agree. In overall size I really could not tell the difference between the '04 and my '02. I could definitely see the difference in the width of the tank and the seat, but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong though, I loved the new '04. However it just doesn't make me want to go out and buy one (that will probably change once I see them out on the streets) like the '02 did when it was first introduced, causing me to trade my '00 R1 in for it.

Out of all the liter bikes, the '04 R1 is definitely my fav though. Compared to the others, it just felt right when I sat on it. Whoever gets theirs soon will be some lucky SOB's fo sho! :rock

Thanks for the pic! Anybody else notice the cool Yamaha leathers in the background? I bought the blue Yamaha leather jacket back in 98 but it may be time for an upgrade, that blue/white jacket looks great :thumbup

As for seating position/height, the 04 seat height is slightly higher than the 03 BUT with the frame, tank, and seat being thinner, the "effective" seat height is actually lower than the 03.

I saw this coming! They are making the new bikes smaller and smaller. You big folks are gonna have to stick with the Goldwings:lol J/K

Seriously, the R1 still looks sweet. The ZX10 is fugly IMO. It looks ok at first glance, but then you see that weird aero tank, and the huge off the wall can. Not to mention it is the smallest of them all. It's too small IMO. All that power in such a small bike just doesn't seem right somehow. The 1000RR is the closet thing to the R1 in looks this year.

It didn't look smaller to me either. In fact if you measure across at the headlights it is almost 2 inches wider (like the old zx7) I guess to fit in the new beams. The bikes I saw where samples and so the fit and finish were not up to yamaha quality. They were on their 5th show so that could have something to do with it. Also I don't like the undertail exaust. Don't flame me but I would have loved to see the ZX10 back end on the yamaha. It looked really clean and narrow. The back end on the ONE is so wide to cover the pipes that it makes it look big. Just my thoughts. D

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to see it in the flesh.

In the past, people have been rattling Yamaha"s ears for not having a more aerodynamic top fairing, which hampered top speed......now that we have it,they are still :rant

WTF....

Having bought my 99 in red/white and having painted it silver/black,I may have to go blue next time.....I get bored fast.

Never owned a blue bike (full blue) in the past.

That would mean buying matching boots, gloves, suit and helmet though.....

?? What ??

Everything seemed good except this. There is nothing "dated" about the 03/04 G1k to me. :dunno

:iamwithst
WTF are you talking about?? The G1k still is considered the "bike to beat" It is still so far leading the torque numbers (at least the ones that have been tested here and there) It's not like the G1k is gonna get it's ass handed to it by any means. Sure the R1 has some nice changes to it...but you make it sound like the G1k is the ZX-9 of old :p

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the bike's styling, unless there was a test track at the bike show.
