'04 Speedo won't read higher than 189 mph!

That's pretty lame. The tach continued to climb slowly, but the speedo wouldn't read any higher.

First time I've buzzed it through the gears. I've just been slabbing it back and forth to work.

I gotta say, I'm not real impressed with the top speed of the little bike. Reminds me a lot of a new Gixxer 600 that I rode a couple of years ago. Nice and stable though.

I'm telling you, riding a Hayabusa really warps your perspective.

Well 1300 cc's will do that. But try turning it. That will warp more then your perspective. About 8 of us went out to V.T. mountains Rt 89 long twisty roads. My bud with a stroker gsxr 1000, and My R1 where the only ones out frount, wfo throu most of all the turns. And I was totaly impressed on the top speed of the R and i've been riding since 1985. road just about every thing. But mostly impressed with the ( motor, as well a handling.)

I can't possibly be the only one that's experienced this.

Who else has let yours stretch its (short) legs?

On my 'Bus, I normally make a check-out run at 190 mph to make sure that the road is good before I really pull the trigger. There's plenty of room. I've been 205 on my Hayabusa, and it sure pulled a lot harder at 185 than the '04 R1 did. In fact, at 185, I was just getting ready to shift into high gear.

Exactly..

Kirk you normally have informative and educative posts..

But comparing an 04 R1 to an Hayabusa?? whats the point?

Even though the HP numbers may be the same up top.. the Hayabusa has about 30% more torque than the R1.. not to mention the Busa is ALOT more aerodynamic and designed to run top end like you are doing.

And an Expert racer in OMRRA why dont you put the 04 R1 where it belongs..

on the road race track..

not gunning for 190mph+ in a straight line..

wake up call....unless you have done some work to your Busa it won't come close to 205, 191 is the the most ever recorded out of a stock Busa. I hope you don't think that you are really going that fast.

...and a stock 'Bus will hit the limiter in high gear at about 196-197 on a stock-sized rear tire in good shape. That is actual speed, as measured on GPS or radar, and takes into account tire slippage.

Let's not forget that size and shape of the rider also has something to do with the top speed a bike will hit.

I'm a relatively small guy (130lbs 5'5") and back when ZX-11s were king (we're talking 1993), the group of guys that I used to ride with made me do a top speed run with one of their ZX-11s to see what it'd do. We had some cops who also used to ride with us and I clocked an honest 179mph, on radared, on a bike with a pipe and jet kit. The owner of the bike was a bigger guy (probably pushing 210+lbs, 6+') was only able to hit 165mph.

I just sold a 2000 Busa and they will not go higher than 191 stock, I have seen people at Bonneville salt flats desperately try to break the 200 barrier with more than a taller rear sprocket and I can say that it's not going to happen with just a rear sprocket and some race gas.

I didn't race on salt. I raced on asphalt. Way easier to go faster.

This stuff is well documented. It is not uncharted territory. For example, there's a group of guys in South Florida that get together every Sunday morning with GPS units to do top speed runs. These guys have a pretty deep base of knowledge. They've been doing it for five years. A buddy of mine down there is a county Deputy and has been 232 on his street bike. I know others that have been over 250. I even know one or two that have been 250 on salt.

But like I said, stock bike goes about 196-197 into the limiter unless you're doing something wrong. I live at sea level, I run a taller 190/55 rear tire, and have used a 39 tooth rear sprocket in addition to the stock-sized 40.

Just because you don't go fast doesn't mean that I don't.

Put my GPS on my 04 and I saw 147 on speedo but gps said 129.
12.25% That'd mean 73mph indicated is actually 65mph... That just blows.

it's not me that didn't go that fast, it's every motorcycle magazine that never even came close to 196-197. Show me some proof and I will stand corrected.

just for the record, I'm not trying to start an argument nor am I calling you a liar, I just disagree with you and will continue until proven otherwise.

Voluntary governing is true, learned it from a tech. Basically, the gov't told the manufacturers to voluntarily govern the bikes or the top speed limit would be legislated in. 186 mph was the agreed upon number- I wonder if Euro-spec bikes are also governed. NHTSA, DOT? If anyone knows the specifics it would be great if shared. I think the first year for this was '01 or '02.

The 'Busa is *supposed* to come from the factory governed to 186 just like everyone else and it would be interesting if a new one exceeds this speed.

Comparing a Hayabusa to any track-type sportbike is akin to comparing a top fuel dragster to an F1 car. Different tools for different tasks, both great at what they do.

I heard a rumor that with simply pipe, map/jet kit a 'Busa will go 388 mph. True?? :bow
