lets here everyones first 600 mile glitches on the 05 r1.
1) i have got a chain dragging sound on a easy take off.
2) on a idle, the engine has a slight hick-up every so often.
3) i have back fires out of the exhaust on a fast down shift.
4) over heats within a minute of doing 35
anyone else have the similar glitches or i am i just got a bad bike.
my 02 never had these problem.
blue 05 with 350 miles, bought it in june, put new pipes on it at 250 miles when the dealer said it would be ok at 250 miles.
please can anyone let me know that these problems will hopefully fix itself when 600 miles is up.

My 04 pinged alot at idle to 2000rpm. It's the gas. The owner's manual states to run 91 to 95 octane and the bikes are set to run lean stock. My power commander riched up the mixture and slowed down the burn preventing pinging and increasing hp. I also played with canned octane booster, but you have to run fuel system cleaners right after.

i base all my judgements from my previous 02
i run regular fuel cause my 02 ran better on it
its not the chain but i do start out in low rpms. i always did though.
the hesitates in 1500-2500 after that its afterburners on, that rpm range is when you hear the dragging sound on take off.
i try to take off slow evenly w/ the gas an the clutch w/o high rev but i guess from what ii'm hearing is the 05 the take off is now quicker and more gas.
overheating is through town traveling
thanks everyone
hopefully i'll get workout before mid-ohio supercycle weekend

Yep, in town riding mine is always at 215-220 with the fan on... These new ones run hot, I have to be going like 45mph just to keep the bike under 200.

So what do you consider overheating ? As long as your fan kicks on and the temp doesn't get over 225 you are not overheating. Running hot yes, but not overheating.

Having a PC running more fuel cools the cylinders (lean mixtures run hotter), using higher octane slows the burn and sustained heated cylinder time, and straight through slip-ons improves cylinder scavaging allowing more fresh air into cylinder and reduces engine heat. My bike runs 5 to 10 degrees cooler and when in traffic takes much longer before the fans kick in.

So far, so good...

I have 575 miles on mine and so far so good.

In PA we've had 80-90 degree temps and super high humidity all summer for the most part. My bike gets hot quick but the temp gauge hasn't read "Hi" yet. Which according to the manual is too hot. It will get right up to 220+ sitting in traffic.

My only concern I have is when the bike is hot, and I'm sitting in neutral I hear a slight, and I do mean slight, grinding noise coming from the motor. If I engage the clutch it goes away. I'm not too concerned about it but, I'll ask the service guy about it when I take it in for the maintainace nonetheless.

My bike is bone stock as of now (with the exception of attacking the licence plate holder with a hacksaw). I always run Sunoco 94 in mine as well.

1-It's not your chain. Like others have said, you need to rev the motor higher before you engage the clutch and take off. YOu're just lugging the motor as it's geared high. Or you can regeared and go -1 up front on the sprocket , OR +2 in the rear.

2-The slight hiccup where the RPM gauge goes up and down by a few hundred RPMs? Get your throttle bodies synched by a shop.

3-Block your PAIR system and it'll stop back fire.

4-Again like others have said. This new R1 runs hot. Hell, mine hits 175 within 3 minutes of warming up. YOu can add a manual fan switch for when you're sitting in traffic.

And no, problems won't fix themselves.

Thats a normal sound. Every motorcycle I've ever owned has done that. Its caused by some of the intenal transmission parts jiggling around from the engine pulses at idle. Even though the idle seems smooth, its fluctuates up and down from the power pulses. When the clutchs is released connecting the engine to the transmission, the engine speed fluctuations make some of the internal transmission parts vibrate around a bit, making the noise. Pull in the clutch lever, the connections is broke and the noise stops.

Thanks Farmer-Ted, I don't remember that sound from my old 98 R1 (but that was 5 years ago). I wasn't too concerned about it but, thought I'd mention it.

Big time newbie here. Finally made the jump from an R6 to and R1. Having the same sort of issues as 2be1rideR1. Just so im reading and understanding right, the bike itself runs a little to lean from the factory? I take it this is something that i can have addressed at the 600 mile service? i have 150 miles on my bike currently.

i just changed gas to 93 marathon and so for it runs better: smoother off the line .
with the heat at 350 miles antifreeze is low already. what antifreeze does everybody use?
i probably wont change the oil until 600 miles.
i'm glad my bike is running smoother cause i got some riders together for supercycle weekend at mid-ohio
12-18 riders, and 1 truck
anybody going
let the r1's rule that day with a r1 forum take-over

The only bad part is the engine/exhuast heat.
I forgot to mention that too, my feet get quite warm while riding! I was wondering if it was just me. Should be nice for fall and spring riding.... :riding

Run 10w-50 here in Aus. The bike runs a few degrees cooler now after oil and filter change. Also run 98 RON fuel, as the garages suck big time. Bike not happy with 95 RON fuel.

If you think the R1 runs hot, you should try the 05 Blade, wow those underseat pupies caused a rather nasty heat rash. :(

The octane numbers in the US and in Europe/Australia dont compare to each other. your 98 octane in Europe is like our 91 here. They use a different system to rate them. So the 89 he is refering to is more like your 95. I personally have been running Cam2 in mine which is 110 Octane and it loves that stuff. Runs way smoother than on regular premium.

Are you kidding?
89 octane in an R1? With that compression ratio? That connot be ok!
What does the (US) user manual say?
In Europe it says 95 octane MINIMUM and I run it on 98!
you sir are correct, the higher octane number the better the anti-detination, ie. pinging, the engine will run at a somewhat higher temp, but the better your engine will run.

if you cant afford the right fuel than dont drive it, because all your gunna do is shorten the life of your engine. and personaly, i dont wana hear complaints if your not doin what you should be doin, there are a few things that i dont skimp on:

1. The consumption of food
2. The consumption of Beer
3. Sex
4. The proper opperation, maintenance, preventative maintenance, and preservation of any and all machines.

You get what you pay for in life, make the best of it...

Mine has problems too. Tonight i got on it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. Then I slowly upshift to 4th. And the clutch doesn't work. The clutch feels like it doesn't have a cable attatched. Then 20 seconds later the bike over heats and the warning light comes on and starts puking coolant all over the road.

I don't want to get rid of the bike. I just want to keep it and have it be reliable. I just want it fixed.

Anyone have any idea what happend? Anyone ever hear of anything smililar happen?
