'05 R1 2nd gear wheelie

My '05 R1 does power wheelies in 1st gear very easily. In fact I can't keep the front wheel on the ground over 8,000rpm @ WOT, no matter what I do. Second gear, however, is a totally different matter. Even though there doesn't seem to be much difference, ratio wise. On flat ground, it absolutely refuses to bring the front up even a little without the clutch. It's almost like there is some kind of "anti-wheelie" system on the bike in 2nd. No, I don't think there is one (anti-wheelie system), but it is wierd that it does it so easily in first, and absolutely refuses in second.
You guys have similar experiences?

standing up....2nd gear, get it going around 50mph. bounce your feet twice. when the second bounce is about to come up, wack the throttle.



sitting down...2nd gear, jump on the throttle till about 60mph then off the throttle and right back on HARD.

I can't do standup wheelies, I have a balance problem. My doctor thought it was my ears but the specialist says that's somewhere in my brain :(
Anyway, I already tried the way you explained and it doesn't work. The front lifts but maximum 10 cm.

I try it sitting down. I am not very comfortable with doing stand up wheelies. Yes, I know I could do some modifications to get more power or lower gearing. I just think it is odd that the bike is so eager to wheelie in first, but won't even begin to in second.
Weather is "double ugly" here right now, in fact it snowing pretty hard. Next decent riding day I will try the bounce method, and report back with the results.

You're going to be going over 100mph to be able to power wheelie in 2nd.

I just rode my friends 05 R1 yesterday, I noticed the same thing. It will pound you like a nail in 1st, but it took a little effort to get it up in 2nd, but once I got it up it ws so perfectley balanced. I came off a 1990 cbr100, that thing was a chore to wheelie.

I could not believe how easy it was to balance. I thought the wheelie problem in 2nd was just due to my weight (275), now I feel better. :finger

Tried it yesterday on a slightly uphill section of road. 9,000rpm in second gear (didn't notice the speed). No way it would power wheelie. Clutched it @ WOT and got the front up about six inches. I guess I will need to put it on a dyno to see if it is making the power it should be.

If you clutched it at WOT in 2nd you'd be on your head right now.....so either something is VERY wrong w/ your bike or your technique is a little off.

A couple of good threads in here on clutching 2nd on your bike....scope 'em out and hope it helps. Essentially, hold the bike at a steady speed (60mph is about right) in 2nd...then give it a 1/4 turn of gas while you pull the clutch in just to the point of slipping and then let it snap back out immediately. That should send it flying unless you roll right back off of the gas.

Boy do I feel stupid! Hadn't done any maintenance on the bike after winter hibernation. Got to checking it out, and found that both tires had about 25psi, and the chain had way too much slack. Took care of those items, and it made a WORLD of difference. Power wheelies fairly easily in second @ 80-100mph with just a little bounce. It is hard to believe how much difference those little changes made.
No excuse for the lack of maintenance, just hadn't gotten a "round tuit".
